I have a Schrade+ 858 that is missing the Old Timer shield. Anyone know where a person might pick one up? Thanks, WB2

Good luck with that one WB2

The 858 shield is unique (large size) to the 858 I believe, and has a fancy engraving.

Yeah, to be honest, 'till lately, I never knew these existed. I've looked through lots of hrdwr. store displays in the past and don't remember ever seeing one. They are monsters to say the least! A whole fist full of knife! I kinda figured that finding a shield would be pretty tough, but thought maybe someone here might know of a source. I spotted a couple on auctions that were lower condition, but none that looked bad enough to justify parting them out or cheap enough to justify buying them just for the shield. Anyway, thanks for weighing in. I'll keep looking and if anyone can help somewhere down the line, I'd appreciate it. WB2

I got to lookin' and it appears that the 6OT shield, of the same era, is the right size and even the proper lettering. Problem with the ones I have, are that they are all brass and I think that the one for the 858 is N/S. Were there ever any 6OT's (and possibly 7OT's) produced during that time frame with a N/S shield? WB2

You might look at some of the smaller Old Timer fixed blades for a donor shield. Tipped Sharpfingers go for very little $.

The NS shield on my type 1 Sharpfinger is 3/4" long by 3/8" wide, but the typeface is single stroke, not double stroke like the example above. I'll look at some of my later ones in a bit.

I've got a 6OT (heck, several of them!) with the proper lettering and the correct size; unfortunately, the shield is brass.

Yah, I think that's pretty much the standard on the 6OT, unless there might be a limited or special edition that had a NS shield. I've got a 5OT around here somewhere, seems to me it had a NS shield but not sure about the size or lettering style. WB2

I may get a few barbs for saying this, but if you are wanting to replace the shield so it does not look like a missing tooth you might try contacting Taylor Brands. Their replica looks like it has a bordered style Old Timer shield. Not sure if it is the correct size, but thought I'd throw it out there. I used to have an 858 that was a special factory order, with an etch, and it had that style of a fancy shield.

They might sell you one for a low cost, might even give you one. If I was wanting to use a knife and have it look good I would do it. Missing shields put the U in ugly.

Just would want to make sure of the size. But you have that already taken care of. It is a nickel silver shield.

I went ahead and sent 'em an email with all the info. Hopefully they'll get back with me as soon as they can. If not, no big deal. I'm like you though, somethin' about a missing shield...well it just ain't right. I'd almost rather be missin' a blade. LOL!

Wow, now that's service! Just recieved a reply from Stewart Taylor. He is forwarding my email to their repair dept. and they will be sending out a shield ASAP. FREE OF CHARGE! Can't ask for better service than that. KUDOS to Taylor LLC.
