Old Timer Steel?

About twenty years ago, I bought my first 'real' knives - a Schrade Old Timer drop point skinner, and a Old Timer Sharpfinger. Just the other day I went to sharpen the Sharpfinger for the first time (never really used either one after buying them) and was amazed at how hard it was to sharpen with my Spyderco Tri-Angle.

Does anyone know what steel they used for the blades? It seems extremely hard, and holds an edge very well.

I guess if I would have bothered to look at the FAQ section I would have the answer. Sorry to waste your guys' time looking at my thread.

I'm still amazed though at how hard my blades are, and how long they hold an edge. Funny thing though, mine have never discolored. Must be the dry Colorado air.

Welcome Ron!

Humidity is probably carbon steel's worst enemy (next to a grinder). I am amazed at how many Schrade knives there are 30 - 40 years old and still look like they were just made. Given the correct conditions and storage, it proves how good the steel Schrade was.

Drop in more often, we like mountain folk.

And we like Jayhawkers. We originally came from Kansas - the Walker / Victoria area. Thanks for the welcome!

try marking the blade edge with a black felt pen and see where the blade and SharpMaker rod are contacting. you may be on the shoulder of the edge and re-profiling with a SM is v. slow unless you have the accessory diamond rods.
i have an old 152OT ( ~25 yrs. old) and it sharpens easily on an EdgePro. roland
