I got curious about this from the ultar light thread where someone mentioned ultra light pioneers. Now I'm all for modern gear but I like the idea of using the modern day equivelents of what they did in the day. For instance a lot of the time I use the Nessmuk trinity. Do any of you guys have links to gear lists from the olden days. Here's one that I like from Otzi. http://www.iceman.it/

The Iceman book is fascinating, I recommend it to anyone-it's about a man they found frozen in the ice that is 5,000 years old... he had knapped tools, woven line and a pack, all handmade from natural materials. Somehow he managed to get rediculously high and far back into the alps on just these primitive tools and a pair of sandals, it's a fascinating story. By old timey i was thinking mid 1900's, not BC...

He got ridiculously high in the mountains considering he'd had a knife fight, (from cuts on his hand, and blood on his clothiing that is not his DNA type) and being shot in the back and still escaping into the mountains. One very tough old boy.

Apparently the combo of small knife and hatchet worked well for him. He was middle age when he died.
