I found an old 3-blade Uncle Henry. It has a bone handle and is about 3" closed. "03753" is incribed in brass liner. The bolsters appear to be silver nickel. If you have any information on this knife such as it's age, please let me know.

Hiya Slatts, welcome to our forum. The numbers on the brass liner seem to read 'serial number' to me. What is the markings and numbers on the tang of the master blade? You can email me a pic for posting here if need be (email address in my profile) Or, if you have no camera, try scanning it on your flatbed.

The most popular three blade knife in any company's lineup is usually the stockman pattern. Here is a Schrade Old timer. Your knife like this?

Hey Phil....

When they first started making the Uncle Henry knives, weren't they all serial numbered? I seem to remember that, and this post jogged my memory.

Seems like I remember UHfan posting something about that indicating a time span of manufacture.

OK guys.... here is the photo Slatts sent me. He admits it's not perfect, but it is what we have to work with. Also, he tells me:

The tang of the master blade reads "SCHRADE WALDEN N.Y. U.S.A. STAINLESS"
The second photo is mine, a stock pic of the Schrade 897 with staglon handles, the shield seems the same, the size is right (just over 3"). We all know the time period of Schrade Waldens (1948-73), but did they ever serialize a knife? I don't think so... So may I kinda take an educated guess that this is a re-issue by Schrade with the old Schrade-Walden markings, dating from the past thirty years?

Let's keep our reputation of being oh-so-friendly and knowledgable and help out Slatts.

TxToothPK,

Thanks for helping me out. Your stock photo matches what this knife would have looked like new. The overall length closed is right at 3 1/2". So this is a Schrade 897 then?

Thanks
Slatts

Slatts, the 897 is my prefered EDC, and I think you would like it too. Big enough to work as intended, but small enough to be comfortable in the pocket withought getting lost in the change, or looking like a banana! :D
I doubt it would have a big collector value because it is used, but it has a great user value, IMHO.

Phil;

As per my post above, I was pretty sure that Schrade actually used to serial number EVERY Uncle Henry....and I just verified this by looking at a mid 1970's era ad for the Uncle Henry line....it states that "every knife is individually serial numbered".....

Who knows why they did this....and when they stopped I have no idea.

Oh yeah, that jogged my memory, Knifeaholic. Schrade UHs were serial numbered because.. get this... Schrade would replace the knife if you lost it. As LT pointed out once, they were probably ripped off many times over that. I just got out a certificates that came with a UH, and it had to be notarized and signed. If any of us could recall the dates they did this, we could further date Slatts' knife.

Hope we have helped in some way, Slatts.
Phil

Funny you should mention that loss replacement policy. I bought a UH pocket knife (mid stockman ?)when I was 13 or 14 from Montgomery Wards. It was the last one and had no box. The clerk gave me another box with the knife. I did in fact end up losing that knife :( I sent in the form, and they sent me a 187UH liner lock as a replacement, which I just happen to be carrying this week. It has to be from the late 70's or early 80's. I can't seem to find a serial number in the liner though. Also interesting was that I had this knife stored for some time because the liner lock didn't function properly. Sometime in the mid 90's I decided to see if Schrade would repair or replace the knife. They fixed it right up, it locks up tight and is one of my favorited EDC's. Is there a way to date these knives?

Made between 69 and 72 Schrade serialized then did not serialize you could find anything however the early ones like his often were again for the guarantee as has been pointed out. The UH line came out around 69 ( or there abouts ). The tang changed in 72 so there ya go. LT
