Old vs New grinds

Having recently purchased a PCKS 110, I noticed that the blade has a much finer, thinner edge and tip than some of the older models I have. Is there a reason for this? It makes me leary of using the knife for heavy chores for fear of bending/breaking the tip or edge. I still love the knife, but I have these fears. The older models seem a little more robust.
 
The older, and i am talking 60's, 110s had a thicker edge and tip. They have been somewhat the same for quite a while since then. I definetely would use the knife for cutting and stay away from prying. Hope this helps,
