For anyone wanting to take the upcoming slipjoint class, the project will be a 3-blade sowbelly. The smaller blades will be more fun to grind and fit up, but it should keep everyone interested.

I did a quick shot of the 3-blade sowbelly pattern John's talking about. It's my current EDC and I neglected to clean it before shooting it.:o It's a terrific knife - thinner and lighter than you'd think, unlike others you may have known. And John has his ways of making it all come out right. Should be a great class.

This is a 1 week class, and I will teach the design and construction of a slipjoint folder. We will start the week learning how they work, then go right into making patterns and cutting blade blanks to prep for heat treat. After that we will spend the rest of the week grinding and fitting blades in the handle frames we make. My personal goal is to be able to send every student home on Friday with a working knife he made himself. That way you have something to show your significant other that you didn't just blow $700 to go play with the guys all week.
The school will supply all the steel and belts, and Uncle Al will come down and let everyone pick out their handle materials. If you want to attempt pearl or ivory, you're on your own.

I was just informed by Regina at Texarkana College that it looks like the class won't make enrollment. She said that the May intro class will be the first one to make for the year.
I will be talking about fancy folders at the spring hammer-in at Old Washington May 1-2. I look forward to seeing ya'll.

That is a real shame. Making a multi-blade folder is an art in itself. I have only made single blade slipjoints so far and I have a couple of 2 blade trappers I am working on at the moment. One of my aims is to make a 3 blade sowbelly by the end of the year so if I was anywhere near Texas I would have been itching to attend.
