Got a strange question for the knowlegable masses

I'm getting involved with Cowboy Action Shooting and it seems like everybody carries some kind of bowie knife.

Would it have been possible to see khukuris on the western frontier between 1860-1900??? If so what style would you most likely see??

Me thinks it would be rather kool to have a Kuri on the gun belt along with a couple of single action revolvers.

It would certainly have been possible - a British army veteran who immigrated to the U.S. any time after 1815 could have sereved with Gurkha troops and acquired a khukuri. Did it ever happen? Check out this thread.

Yeah, I thought of that picture also. I'd bet it was one in a million, though. As Berk said, a definite "carry over" by a british soldier. My bet would be that it could have been an Indian khukuri that found it's way over here on a trading mission to the Far East.

Craig,

I was the one that found that picture. It shocked me also. I found it in a blackpowder magazine. It was from the Battle of Antietam. Shrike9, as a member of SASS also, you can wear this. It is from that era. Anything from 1800-1899 is acceptable.
