Off and on for about the last year and a half I've been looking at the old Western Brand knives on Ebay. Well, last week I finally bid on some and won.:)

Today I got home and there was one waiting for me, an old Western Model: L48ABG. On the left side of the blade near the guard it's marked:

WESTERN
BOULDER, COLO
MADE IN U.S.A.

On the right side is:

L48ABG

The specs are (aprox):

OAL: 8"
Blade length: 4 1/4" (tip to front of guard)
handle: 3 3/4"
Blade thickness: 1/8"
Handle thickness 3/4"

The blade is made from a High Carbon steel, but I don't know what. Takes and holds a good edge. The handle is stacked leather with exposed tang and has a nice feel to it. Looks to be an Aluminum butt cap and Brass half guard.

It came with what looks to be the factor leather sheath. The sheath is light brown, fold over style with oak leaves tooled into it. This knife and sheath are a fixer upper. The knife was durty with some rust on the blade, tarnished brass and there was some mildew on the sheath. Also the stitching on the sheath is coming out. Am going to clean up the knife and sheath and put it back to use.:)

Some one once sent me an old Western Catalog, which I read quite a bit then lost when I moved reccently. Thanks!

What do you guys think of the old Western brand knives? I wish Camillus would bring some of them back in either a Carbon steel on a decent Stainless like AUS8/440C.

You got yourself a good knife. Those old ones have chrome vanadium steel blades, and they do take and hold a great edge.

Thanks for the information Danbo. I really like this little knife. Used it in the kitchen tonight on tomatoes and it worked great.:) Can't wait for my others to show up. Do you happen to have any of the old Western knives?
