Hey, I saw a beautiful knife at the factory yesterday. (I wish it was mine, but alas, it isn't.) Its tang stamped:

SCHRADE
U.S.A. 498

It is certainly made of high carbon steel, not schrade+, has a leather handle, with black, white and red stripes on either end. Appears to have the same bolster and -err- butt cap as a 153UH.

Noone there was sure when it was made and Dave Swinden wasn't around.

Anyone here know when this one was made? It is a really pretty knife, and in awesome shape to.

I will try to get a pic of it monday...

498 on ebay

Steve...

I asked about these not long ago. This is a beautiful knife; but I like stacked leather handles with colored spacers in all cases. These were also made in 'faux' stag (lon),and I think the numbers were 498. 498L, 499. 499L.
Came in a box marked that these were 'Benchmade', and were called, I think, the '49ers'. I'd very much like a mint-in-the-box one of these. I liked the square ended sheath that came with these as well.

Very similar to the Camillus knives of the same era. What era was that? I'm not sure of the years... I hope LT will join in.

Here's where I brought up this knife:
498

Where's your Dad been, Steve?

This may help original Schrade factory ad. late 70 tys even early 80tys I would have to look it up I have other info on it I am just to beat to dig further right now, let me know if you need more. LT

Hi Steve. The 498 was made from 1974 until 1979, and they brought it back from on quick return engagement in 1983. Feels like old times. Debbie

Debbie I did not know UH fan was your handle. How are you. OK troops send in your questions now I ( LT)and the rest of the amateurs are on R&R you have the boss here now. I hope things are OK with you. I was at the circus today,( auction). IP lot #1 went for 3 mil 650 thou. Taylor Cutlery, Lot #4 Work in progress went for 34 thou I could have paid that out of pocket but where do I put a half million pounds of product ( it was the steal of the day ) United Cutlery, the finished product went for 70 thou.

Anything old was scoffed up in the IP and Wip lots. Machinery which was crap sold for more than it was worth and good stuff sold for less. Kind of like ebay.

Please let us know what you are doing I am trying to get hold of the paper work catalogues ect for posterity. It does not look good, which is no surprise.

For those of you who do not know her this is Debbie Chase who has forgotten more than all of us together will ever know. Welcome back. LT

Uh oh...looks like I've been found. Been trying to keep a low profile until after the official closing of the doors, but I had a tough time staying away. I was just monitoring bladeforums every now and then, but then I just couldn't resist anymore. Couldn't bring myself to go down to the auction to see all that good stuff going to people who just don't value the history. Glad to see that it was someone like LT who got the cornerstone....someone who truly appreciates its worth.
