Good evening, this is my first post and I'm hoping some Buck experts can answer my question. I am trying to date a folder that was my Paw Paw's and it was very special to him. It is now a very special knife to me. My Maw Maw is 89 years old and has started giving his possessions away to the grand kids that will appreciate them. While holding the knife I wondered how long he carried it.

On the side of the box it is marked Lancer model no. 305. Stamped on the one side of the blade is Boker USA and on the other side is 8288 with a small plant stamped above it. The wood is dark and the ends are silver.

Can anyone shed some light on the approximate build date? If pictures would be helpful, I will try to upload some.

It sounds like the wrong knife was placed in a Buck box...From your description of the KNIFE...you have a Boker, which there is a seperate forum for under the MFG. forums.

Wow, I feel like an idiot. I'm pretty new to knives and never heard of a Boker. I'll post in their sub forum. Thank you.

You're not an idiot. You're just new! :)

I moved this to the Boker forum. The plant is Boker's signature tree, from outside their old factory. Great knives, even now.

The 8288 is still a current model. Id call it a 2 blade pen knife. Hard to tell the age without pictures. Terry can likely shed some light on by seeing pictures?

Boker USA stamps signify that it is at least 25 years old, as that is when we stopped using the USA stamp because all production was moved back to Germany. Other than that, I do not have much information, but pics would help.

If it still has the round nickel-silver shield in the handle that is a good clue for age also.
A tree shield without a trademark registered symbol (r) is a good indication that the knife was made before 1976.
Got some pics to show off?

Here are some pics of the knife. I couldn't get close up pictures of the tree but you can make out the 8288 and it does not have the R. The insert is missing and I can't remember ever seeing it. When he was a live I used to ask to "play" with his knife all the time. It has been 19 years since he has passed. I know it may sound strange, but it makes me feel good having it and I sometimes do carry it. It was used hard and sharpened over and over again. Its pretty dull now but I won't sharpen it.

I am new to knives but I threw in a pic of my 1911 and the Emerson CQC10. I took a look at the Boker site and think I will be adding a Boker to my growing collection. So far I have a few Old Timers that were my Paw Paw's and a Buck Squire that my wifes Grandpa bought me for Christmas. I think a new pen blade knife would be a good start. A great way to start a new tradition with my kids and future grandkids.

That's a beautiful old knife, and it looks like it had a good life, of real usefulness. I have a similar knife that was my grandfather's. It is a tribute to their utility that the same models are available and valued today.

The handle appears to be delrin. The main blade has the long pull, and by 1980 or so, these were being made with a smaller nail nick.
So I'm guessing your knife was made between 1965-1975. Looks like your Grandpa used the pen blade a lot.

Thanks for all of the replies! I figured the knife was made in the 60's or 70's. I am so glad I posted though and glad I can call the knife by the proper name.
