I have a chance of getting one of these in good condition. Was wondering about Bucks heat treat in the 440c.How it holds an edge,I know heat treat is everything in steel. How well were these knives back then.Looking to bone out deer or bigger animals with it,what can I expect in performance. Thanks for any input.

I think that your opinion of how it performs for you will likely be based on what you are used to.

Based on the performance of my 60's era Buck 440C knives, Buck did a good job with the heat treating. My Buck 440C blades hold an edge a bit less well than 154CM and noticeably less well than S30V. But it holds an edge far better than 420HC.
