Can someone please explain exactly what this shield is, and maybe why it was chosen to use? It appears to me to be a knife, hammer, and bolt(?). What is the official name for the shield? Thanks.
It's what it looks like. A knife being hammered through a bolt. In the early days of Buck knives they used to test and advertise their knives, by hammering them through a bolt.
As Old Biker said. The hammer/knife/bolt shield is a historical icon for Buck dating to the 1940's when Hoyt Buck would demonstrate the toughness of his knives by cutting a bolt on his anvil. Here is a YouTube link with Lori Buck talking about it. Of course you can find other YouTube videos of people giving their Buck knives a wack.
In the earlier knives, the shield was glued in a depression of the handle scale. When Buck started using the integrated sintered frames, the shield was on a tower attached to the frame.
