I just inherited an older camillus knife and would like to know its history and value. Here are the specs:

Blade: 4 3/4"
Guard: straight brass 1 3/4"
Handle: Leather washer 3 1/2" with a lead base.
there are two brass washers between the
top leather ones, and two between the
bottom leather washers.

Stamping: CAMILLUS (on the base of the
CUTLERY CO. blade just above the
CAMILLUS, NY. guard)

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

almost reminds me of one of the world war 2 mark 1, or pilots knives. Of course it was other companies, than camillus (that I know of) that used lead conuter weights in some of the knife handle pommels of the mark 1. Usually though it was the colonial ones, or some of the plastic pommel versions. The mark 1 though would be stamped as such of course with usn. Not sure what you may have there.

do you have any pics?

I have pictures, and I will email them to you. the pommel appears to be lead, but after polishing it some places come through as copper colored. There is no usn stamp. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
I did get your email, but for some reason I cannot get it to download properly.

This knife is a WWII era fixed blade knife that was made for the Army Air Force. The model #5679 features a 5" glazed blade, leather washer handle with 4 brass spacers, aluminum butt and a leather sheath made by Mosser. This knife was used in all types of emergency kits. Camillus produced 75,000.

Thank you for your help. my next question is: can camillus replace the handle on this knife and if so how much would it cost.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
We do not have the leather washers and brass spacers for this knife handle.

Hey Chris- It sounds like you have the exact same knife and problem that I have/had... I've already had mine restored by a custom knife maker in Maine, including new guard, preshrunk-epoxied-leather washer handle that is pollished to perfection, and a new heavy leather sheath... The blade was in nearly unused condition and has had 98% of discoloration and pitting removed... The aluminum pommel shines like new... Cost me $140- for the work... BUT, I still am not sure what I have... Send me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail you a picture to check and see if we have the same knives. -Bob, b3provencher@aol.com.

after looking at the pic of your knife, I dont think they are the same
My knife does not curve up at the point. your blood grove almost touches the stamping and I have probably 1/4 inch. maybe mine is worn down, or maybe the knife maker that worked on yours altered it. I sent both of you pictures, so maybe you can tell me.

Thanks Again,
Chris

Hey Chris- I never received your e-mail with photo... Can you please try again? Not knowing what I've got is driving me nuts! Thanks. -Bob
