Older Custom Knife Identification

Anyone see anything in this knife that may help ID the maker? The only possible clues I have are that the knife likely came from California and probably was not made within the past ten to twenty years or so. The maker's initials may have been "JN".

Also: What is the handle material? It looks like ancient stag to me, as it doesn't look like any modern stag that I've seen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I just looked in Knives Annuals 1983, 1990, and 1995. NO maker with a mark or name with the initials N.J.

It's a nicely-made knife from a lesser-known hobbiest, maybe from California, who never submitted the info to the Annuals. :(
