I enjoy the collectors site to look at the old brochures from the 50's and 60's, I see a squadron of patterns I have never seen actual pics of. One in particular interested me tonight, and I can't seem to find much about it.

It's either a 780 or 7803. It's like a Muskrat, except the clips are different sizes. I wondered if anyone had a real one they would post. I'd like to see one and also what the blade etch reads.

The seven means a two blade knife. the second and third numbers are a pattern or style (80 - Sportsman's knife). the last number is the type of handle(3) which is Bone Stag. The 3/4 denotes the blade, Clip blade in the place of a spear blade. The etch says "Hunter's and Trapper's Special". Nope I don't have one either.

This information came straight from the Schrade Catalog E and Suppliments -1928-1938, A. G. Russell's reprint from 1971. The numbering system is explained on pages 8 and 9.

Very interesting. I noticed that in the 40's and 50's Schrade Walden seemed to be converting from the 4 digit to 3 digit format. Pretty amazing to look at some of those price lists from that era and see how many different patterns they were making, and to follow the Schrade Ellenville patterns back to those times.

By the 70's, they had really streamlined the traditional slip joint patterns, and branched off into a lot of different types of knives. Seemed to begin happenning in the late 50's and early 60's . . . about the same time they transitioned more to the plastic handles and only used natural handle materials for special runs.
