Question:
I just purchased a SOG SEAL 2000 knife from a seller on ebay. He doesn't have the original box for it but claims it's an older model although it looks just like the current models (ie: part. serrated edge) but it comes with an older looking sheath that actually appears to be leather, not nylon and certainly not kydex.

I know current SEAL 2000 knives are made of AUS6 steel but what were the older models (1990's) made of? 440A? Is there any way to determine when the knife was made and consequently what kind of steel it is?

The older Seal 2000s would have their old logo, the newer ones had the split bullet logo. The Seal 2000 has been discontinued now.

The Seal 2000 always had an AUS6 blade. When these first came out in the market, AUS6 was unheard of in the US, so they listed them as 440A, the closest American equivalent. I'm not sure if I remembered correctly so better to wait for Chris's confirmation just to be sure

johnu2 has the correct answer. They have always been AUS6 but we did list them as 440A at one point.

i beat the toss outta my seal 2000 i`ve taken chips out the edge with a bastard file (sharpmakered it after that) , thrown it , carried it , stabbed it into trees , chopped with it , and it just keeps begging for more! i also attempted to sharpen the top edge although all this did was make it very pointy.
