Older Sharp maker compatibility

Hi all.

I thought I'd share something that might be useful to somebody with older Sharpmakers. I have an older model I purchased quite a few years ago. It doesn't have the cool self containing case, has one set of stones, and only one angle setting to sharpen. I've not really paid attention to sharpeners until recently, and of course learned the Sharpmaker has evolved and changed over the years. When I discovered Spyderco sells diamond and ultra-fine stones I was interested in adding them to my set up. However, when I called Spyderco customer service to ask if the current stones would fit my version of Sharpmaker, I was told that they would not work and were a different size. I would need to buy a new Sharpmaker. Anyway, I don't know why but I decided to order ultra-fines anyway just to see if they would work. If they didn't, I was going to order the current version of Sharpmaker, so I could use them. I was pleasantly surprised to find the new ultra-fine stones fit perfectly in my older sharpener. They are the same size as the stones that came with mine. See the pics below. As you probably know, the stone with the red marking is the ultra-fine. They do not wobble or move around any more than the original stones that came with my sharpener.

So, this post isn't to dis Spyderco for the answer I got, but it's to share with other folks that have a Sharpmaker like mine that they can buy the newer stones that weren't available in the past and you don't have to buy a new unit. Now, I don't know that this will be true for all of the Sharpmaker revisions, but if you have one like mine in the pictures I posted, you are probably in luck.

Not sure what you're asking if anything? I have a SM 203MF like that and all the rods fit fine. I believe the end of the UF rods are marked with red to identify them.

Hey Sharp Guy - Yep. I started the post from my phone to upload the pics, and then hopped on the computer to edit the post and do all the typing. I was hoping to get it done before anyone read it. You're too fast! Thanks for posting.

It's all good OS64! I figured something was up. I guess I should've waited to post anything. Anyway...I've had years of great use with my old Sharpmaker. I keep telling myself I'm going to buy the updated version but I haven't really needed it yet. I've been rotating a bunch of different knives so not much need to reprofile at 30°. When I do need to reprofile I can put something underneath the base, set the angle of the rods with an angle finder, and I'm all set. It is kind of a pain do that so I'm sure I'll upgrade at some point. In the meantime, the old SM 203 and the original medium and fine stones are still going strong.

Hey that's a great idea - setting a different angle the way you described and still using the existing stone mounts. I've not ever tried other angles. Maybe I'll try it on an old fishing tackle box fillet knife to experiment. Thanks for the idea! Now, I need to order some other stones, now that I know they will fit.

SG - do you know if the original (or older) kit like mine that only came with one set of stones is closer to medium or fine? I tend to think maybe they are fine as I can get shaving sharp using them and a strop. I want to fill the gaps and get the diamond for removing more steel quickly, and then a medium if that is what I am missing.

Thanks!

Mine came with the medium (brown) and fine (white) rods like they do now. The set came in a vinyl pouch as pictured.

BTW, I can't/won't take credit for the idea for changing the angle on the SM. That came from the guys over on the Spyderco Forum. I'm pretty sure they've shared that idea here as well.

Interesting. Based on that information, I'm going to assume my white rods are fine, and I'll order the brown (medium), and maybe diamond rods. Mine never had a zip-lock pouch like yours, but I wish it did. I do have some even older Smith's round ceramic sharpening rods that came in a pouch. Thanks for the info!

OS64, now I'm curious. Did you buy your Sharpmaker new?

Yes. I bought it at a knife store in Fort Worth years ago. I'm guessing, but maybe 15-20 years ago. Could be longer.

I ordered medium rods last night. I wasn't sure about getting the diamonds. They have mixed reviews and are expensive.

After I asked my question I started looking through some old catalogs. It looks like Spyderco offered the SM with a variety of stone & case (none, plastic, cordura) combinations. My SM is from the mid 1980's and the '86 catalog shows 4 different versions. The 1997 catalog shows 6 versions. Based on the model number on mine (203MF) I thought they might've offered different versions but didn't know for sure until now.

Everything I've read (here and the Spyderco Forum) indicates the diamond or CBN rods are a must have accessory for the SM. I haven't bought a set because I haven't really needed them yet. I do plan on getting them eventually. Remember to use light pressure.

Also keep in mind that you can attach a set of DMT Diafold sharpeners or even different grits of sandpaper to your existing stones. There are a few threads around here somewhere where guys have suggested doing that to be able to have grit capabilities in between the diamond/CBN and the medium SM rods.

I've been considering a set of diamond or CBN rods for my SM. Is one better than the other? Will one outlast the other? Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

I asked this same question on the Spyderco Forum a while back. I was told that the CBN rods were made as a trial run to test the medium and they were deliberately made in the same grit range as the diamond rods. Sal chimed in on that thread and said, regardless of which rods I select, to make sure I press lightly so I don't dislodge the material from the rods.

So the rods are essentially identical in use but use different materials to accomplish the same thing.

What are cbn rods?

Cubic Boron Nitride

Thank you. I don't think I've seen them before. I am new to this though. Like my sharp maker arrived yesterday new. Haha

IIRC, Sal said in another thread that a different manufacturing process was used for the CBN rods to enable the CBN particles to better adhere to the substrate.

I bought the CBN rods over a year ago and they work very well.
