Given that there are probably 100 or so to choose from, it would help if you gave a bit more info regarding what you are looking for. Are you after "grail" collectible knives? Models that were milestones in Spyderco's history? Knives that are the most likely to appreciate in value over the next N years? Models that are highly regarded as users? Five models each with a different lock, or handle material, or blade shape? Five knives that will look attractive, be conversation pieces, or intimidate visitors when displayed in your office or den?

I don't know the answers to Deacon's questions... but I can tell you my favorite older Spydies. These are the Spydies that I would absolutely replace if they were lost or stolen...

1. Caly Jr. - all the models are great, but I like the burgundy ZDP-189 model the best. This blade is the best slicer Spyderco has ever produced, it is lightweight, and IMHO, it has the best ergonomics of any Spydie ever.

2. The C-19 Bob Terzuola Jr. - Year after year, I keep thinking that Spyderco can release a knife that is as smooth and sophisticated as my Terzuola. Nothing has topped it yet. It comes in both anodized aluminum and G-10 scales. Both are great - but I like the plain edge the best...

3. The C-20 Baby Goddard - This is a tiny little micarta knife which only came in partially serrated. The original release was a dark green/black micarta and a sprint came out a couple of years ago with dark burgundy micarta. They are both the same otherwise - and the burgundy is still available from several dealers. It is the ultimate in sophistication and can serve as your "formal" knife when you are wearing a suit - or when a large knife would be in appropriate. It isn't much different than a Ladybug in size - but the micarta and Goddard design put it into a different class entirely.

That's my $0.02.

five that are well liked by most and sure to appreciate,
Well liked is easy, just about all the older Spydercos are well liked, with the Police, Harpy, early Terzuolas, original Michael Walker, Jess Horns, "Q", Wegners, Lums, and the Calypso Jr having the largest groups of fan. Sure to appreciate is a whole 'nother ball game. The Spydercos most likely to do that are the current ones. The older ones have already done so and, from what I've seen, more than a few of them have peaked and are bringing less now than they did a few years back. Could just be the economy, could be that too many Sprints of some models have diluted the demand for the older versions of them.

+1
There is no simple answer on your question. Paul clearly explain it.
If you want to buy knives, which will appreciate, you need to get ones, which were recently discontinued, overstock and sold at clearance price. Than you will have a chance, that may be some of them will get hot. But most of them are getting hot only temporary. Most likely sprint will drive price of original model down. New hot model can bring price of yesterday's hot model down as well.
So how I see this: buy only knives, which you like, than it doesn't matter where price would go, you enjoy them, so you made your money worth.
Good luck.
