So when I first got into knives I liked traditionals, then after a while I gravitated to more modern knives with "exotic" steels and modern handles. I switched for a number of reasons, mainly because I thought they were "better". Well, tonight I found out I was mistaken. I was fixing my laptop(really rigging cardboard and tape to make it power on :D) and I decided to grab the old stand by--Buck 301.

I found out that it did the job just as good, if not better, than a knife costing 4 or 5 times as much. The small but robust sheepsfoot blade is a thing of beauty, it easily gets into nooks and crannies that a bigger knife made from modern materials couldn't do. I definitely have a re-found respect for the classics!

Anyway, I thought I'd share the story. Have a good one!

You share a common discovery.

A lot of folks find traditional blade sizes and shapes to be more useful for day to day actual work than those of modern one-handers. The one-handers slice wonderfully well. Great if you are cutting large sheets of cardboard. But for the smaller fiddly things most of us more often find ourselves cutting, traditional blade shapes are more useful.

(Personally, while I normally carry both a one-hander and a traditional, 99% of the cutting gets done by the traditional.)

That's not a bad idea I might try it out

For the longest time, I carried a Leek in my back pocket and a traditional in my front. Lately, it has just been the one. I am about to be self employed and I think I'll give a fixed blade and a traditional a shot.
