Hi Oldminer!

No pics at the moment, but you just reminded me that I saw a full sized Calypso in black micarta at my local knife shop the other day. It was really hard to leave without it. The funny thing was it was sitting on a Resilience box... There was some wear on the clip. Wondering if someone bought a Resilience and then "returned" the Calypso??? Crazy.

Not much for vintage spydercos. I have an older G2 Endura with a reground tip and an older aus-8 dragonfly that is a second. I have some other really rare spyderco stuff though. My mom worked there in the 90's

Both of Police models are vintage. Picked up my straight edge in 1989. Just saved my aluminum grip from a pawn shop. It's configuration is 1995. It was in perfect condition. It's in my pocket right now.

Civilian, Q, and (I think) Cricket from Santa Fe stone works. Picked 'em up sometime in the' 90s

That's actually a copilot not a cricket.

oldminer? Are you mining for old, or are you suggesting that 21 (I assume 1993 is your birth year) is old? ;)

No recommendations on vintage Spydercos (just got into them myself), but some of those are real beauties. I've gotta say, something about the Police model just does it for me... I know it's a relatively large knife, but I'll definitely have to pick one up for myself. I wouldn't mind finding an older model too...

Only suggestion I can make is to start hunting through pawn shops and flea markets. Firearms, knife, hunting, etc. swap meets would also be a good place to check... I often find "vintage" gear at places like that, but the prices usually reflect that. Or, make friends with some local knife guys and subtly drop hints that you'd like to buy a piece off them.

Then again, I just realized that you're really looking for pictures of them, not actually looking to buy... But, why not go out and find one, then post your own pictures? Then everybody wins!

The one that started it all in 1981, the original "2 screw" Worker, along with the copy of it from the Evolution Set that was released twelve years later...

Here's an early example of their second knife, the Mariner. Plain edged Mariners are unusual enough but, according to Sal Glesser, only a handful were part of an early test of black ti-ni coating.

In the early 90's Spyderco also sold some of their knives that had been embellished by craftsmen. Here are a couple Hunters and a Police, with soft metal overlays by Gary Blanchard...

That Worker looks great... Almost looks like a really small version of the Police. The black Mariner is pretty neat too... Has it not seen much use, or is the coating just that resilient?

I've never tested it myself, but I don't think the coating on that Mariner is all that durable. There are some scratches on the blade that are noticeable in that photo, and some more on both the blade and handle that are harder to see. I'm guessing the original owner put it away after they occurred.

I remember the Worker. I really wanted one for a long time. However when I first saw the Police it was all I could think about till I got one.

Yeah, I saw the scratches, which is why I asked... I assumed you were the original owner, and that's how the scratches got there. :P

I like the black coated blades by some of the manufacturers, but the coating seems too wear too quickly and doesn't provide much functionality (I suppose) for daily use... The only function I could see it providing is corrosion resistance. They look cool while they're new, but I think the scratches get old pretty quickly. I'm happy with bare metal... I'm not tactical enough yet for the black, yo.
