I possess one of those. Havent used it very much. Whats your opinion of them? Are they very useful as a field sharpener? Its pictured on the bottom.

It's hard to tell from the picture if it is a smooth steel. A smooth steel will not technically "sharpen" an edge. It will help align an already sharp edge. It if is a grooved steel, it may act like a file, which leaves a rough, toothy edge. You have to decide if such edges are suitable for your purposes.
 
I have the Gerber sharpening steel. I don’t know if the Old Timer is the same, though it looks similar. The Gerber is grooved on the long edges, and smooth on the flats. So you can do a certain amount of light sharpening with the grooved edges of the steel. Then you can burnish the edge of your knife on the smooth section.
