When we received this burl I questioned if it was olive. The logger assured me it was. After several months of research I've come to the conclusion it is Russian Olive.
Russian olive is a dark brown with a hint of green. It is much darker and more brown than redwood. If you held Russian olive burl in one hand and redwood burl in the other, you would easily see the difference and not mistake one for the other.
As far as stabilizing ebony, Mike Ludeman at WSSI told us ebony will stabilize if the thickness is less than .375. Stabilized ebony finishes like glass.
African blackwood stabilizes well even with its high oil content. I personally prefer natural blackwood to stabilized. Natural blackwood finishes better. The only reason we carry stabilized blackwood is knifemakers want it.
