Olive oil on folders...

If you looking for maximum slickness, Militec-1 would be much much better. TuffGlide would work better, too.

If you're worried that you'll be using the knife for food, I pick mineral oil over olive oil. These oils don't work nearly as well as Militec-1 for lubricity, mind you.

i'd advise against using olive oil, it will go bad and stink and could cause mold if left unattended

Absolutely.

Vegetable based oils not only spoil but the viscosity breaks down very easily. This will leave a gummy residue which is very hard to get rid of.

If you don't want to use petroleum based oils (like machine oils), may I suggest silicon based lubes as an alternative?

I make a thin paste out of Mobil 1 and one of the copper based anti-seize compounds. Works great!

If you wanted something that would stay in the hinge area, but, not hurt you...How about vaseline? Might um...Loosen you up a little if you eat too much....But, I can't see it hurting you...

Yeah. It's non-toxic so good for knives that may come into contact with food products. But difficult to get it to flow into nooks and crannies?

Dab it on...hit it with a blow dryer. It will flow like water. Or, heat it up in a spoon and drip it where you want it. Never said it was a GREAT idea...just an idea...

The only reason I suggested the Vaseline is because it wouldn't hurt you if you eat it. There are a ton of better lubricants out there. But, its an option.

Cool. Maybe, I'll give that a try on my new Police. It's still too new (a bit stiff). I put a couple of drops of honing oil on it but it drips everywhere (through the seams). At least the Vaseline is a bit more viscous.

If your working around food with it sure, since most likely you will be cleaning it often to get the food off and out of the knife it won't set long enough to go bad or stink ect. If your needing it to be a general lube and not using it around food go with Tuff Glide or Mil Tec, Tuff Glides the best in my humble opinion it dries and doesnt collect dust and dirt like most lubes.
