Can anyone tell me where I can buy Olive Wood for knife handles in the United States? The only place I have found so far is in the UK. Carving blocks and bowl blocks are available in England. Nothing I have found so far is thin enough for knife handles without cutting it down.

Thanks for your help,
Lightman

I bought some several years ago from Colonial Hardwoods in Virginia.

I just got some from here:
http://www.righteouswoods.com/

I wasn't able to find thin pieces anywhere, so I got a turning blank and cut it up. It was green and I've been stabelizing it in pentacryl for a little over a week. Should be done by now and ready to start dryin. If all you need is a pair of scales, drop me an email.

I bought 2 nice standard knife handle size blocks last weekend at the Little Rock show from Nico Bernard(South Africa), and they are nice. I have to say that I still havent been able to see the grain, it is so fine. Gotta be one of the most dense woods I have ever seen. A light yellow in color with really stripey swirly lines all throughout the block. Should make for an interesting handle.

Do a search for vendor name Cook-woods. They always have some. Or do a search on something like "Olive burl".

Joss, I called Righteouswoods the other day since we're in the same state. :) The guy I talked to was very pleasant but I have yet to order anything so I can't much beyond that. However, I am planning to take a ride out there one day soon. Their hours are 9-6 M-F and 9-12 on Saturday. Looks like they have some really nice wood!

Joss, the guy at righteouswoods was really knowledgeable and seemed to have worked with knife makers before. I ordered the wood over the phone and was nervous about what I might get since I had to rely on them to pick it out. I was really pleased with what they sent me. I even sent them an email to let them know how much I appreciated the great customer service. Shipping was pretty quick too.
