I am seriously considering the small size of this model. I once had a Submariner I had to sell for sad reasons, and am looking to replace with quality but dressier. Anyone own one of these guys.. looking at about $2500 Canadian new and with all the *%$@#% taxes paid..
thx in advance
cheers

I own a full-size Speedmaster, built in 1972. It's my favorite watch. I'm sure you will be happy with one.

Thx DBI, I tried on both, the bigger one seemed to offer better protection to buttons and stem, but looked too big for my wrist, at least for when I play dressup :)
Maybe it will be my xmas present to myself..a small with blackface
cheers

...the GMT model. The second time zone is cool, and the bezel is sharp looking.

As for the size, I know a couple of people who got the mid-size, and later wished they had gone big. What looks big at first usually grows on you, and larger watches are definately in style.

Regards,

Jeremy

thx Jerok..I checked the models out in person and in some of those fancy watch mags but never saw a GMT model..time to google..

There is no GMT Speedmaster. Period. You must mean a Seamaster.

I agree on getting the "real" thing instead of the midsize automatic, which I feel also lacks a certain balance in its dial-layout. I own a '99 Professional and I never even considered the midsize, even though my wrists aren't exactly of the constructor-workers variety. Or get a well-kept pre-owned one! Big watches are in style but remember that the Speedmaster started off as a big watch as early as in 1957. Nothing too fashionable about the Speedmaster and that's what I like about it - a Panerai will look odd ten years from now I'm afraid.

thx to PeteLCl.. I have done searches, to see if there are better deals than painfull retail out there, also leery of shipping customs etc. Does anyone know good reliable new or used dealers. I fear e-bay for something of this magnitude.
cheers

I have the Speedmaster Pro Reduced, i.e. the automatic version of the man of the moon watch - got in trade on a watch deal when a man on the moon deal fell through :( never wear it just sits in my safe, the larger manual wind version is "the watch" IMHO just waiting for one to come along at the right time for me

Can some explain why the Speedmaster is so popular?

Omega makes a nice watch but for a comparable amount of money, there are models my Sinn and Bell & Ross that OWN the Speedmaster feature for feature.

Rhesus Feces,

What model of Sinn do you have?

I've just started my watch research and I really like the look of Sinn watches - especially the Sinn EZM 1. Any tips on other models that I might like and good web sites to check out? I like the reverse bezel and it's understated ruggedness.

Thanks in advance.

Hi brewthunda-

If you like Bell & Ross and Sinn, you'll probably also favor the looks of Tutima, Fortis, and Kobold. All have a "tool approach" to their designs.

~ Blue Jays ~

P.S. to uitlander -- I currently own an automatic mid-size Omega Seamaster purchased a few years ago. Steel bezel on a steel bracelet with a white face. It has served me very well. Soon to be sold to purchase additional knives and watches!

Rhesus, I'm sure other watches equal the performance and quality of Omega, but I'm a space buff, and only the Speedy has been to the moon.

brewthunda,

I've owned the 656, 656 Schwarz, EZM2, 8828 Ti, and the 203 St, currently the only Sinn I have is the 656 Shwarz.

The EZM1 is the king of "tactical" watches and I hope to own one myself in the not too distant future. You would be more than happy with it if you decide to buy one.

To me, watches are a very personal thing, I wouldn't feel comfortable telling you what you'd like. I can tell you I've been very happy with the Sinns I've owned and haven't had the slightest bit of trouble with any of them. They keep accurate time, are tough as nails due to being held to DIN standards, and Sinn's straightforward, uncluttered, modern styling appeals to me.

Ask yourself what you want and need in a watch, find a model that suits you and don't look back.

The ONLY place to buy Sinn is Watchbuys, anyone else selling them in the US is full of crap if they tell you they're an authorized dealer, and if they tell you it has "papers signed by an authorized dealer" again, BS. Sinn does not provide signed paperwork, you are registered in their owner database in Germany when you purchase. They know where your watch came from and if it wasn't Watchbuys, no warranty for you. Additionally, Watchbuys customer service is second to none.

Bell & Ross are also fantastic in every respect, and the best dealer on the 'net for B&R is Bob at www.broadarrow.net he primarily stocks/deals in B&R's "professional" line but can have anything you want shipped overnight directly from B&R. He is one of a handful of authorized dealers in the US, and again, customer service is second to none.

If you need any further info, or model specific info on the ones I've owned feel free to ask.

Blue Jays and Rhesus,

Many thanks for the info.

I'm looking to buy a nice watch for my birthday in May. I've just started my research (which is half the fun), and your info is really helpful.

Whatever I wind up buying, i'll get some pics up here for all the gear junkies to enjoy.

Cheers,

Mark (brewthunda)

As for the Speedy, I think that saying it is "owned" by Sinn, et. al. is probably an overstatement.

All use established movements, are sturdy designs, and are comperable in price.

The EZM-1 is a nice watch, issued in small numbers in Germany, and runs on the soon to be extinct Lemania 5100. This particular watch has had some problems with the power reserve (how long it runs on a full wind) in some examples, so watch for that problem. Oddly, the 5100 does not show this problem in any of the company's other models.

One particularly popular Sinn model was the 156, no longe made, but still to be found here and there. It is not as dressy as the Speedy, but a nice watch.

Other 'tool' chronos include Tutima, Bell&Ross, etc. as mentioned. If I were buying a chrono right now, I would consider getting something with the Lemainia 5100, because it is going out of production, and wathes featuring it will be harder to come by.

Check out: http://interaxia.com/horology/sinn156/

for a great review.

The Speedy is classic, handwound, and just as 'bulletproof' as anything out there, though.

Regards,

Jeremy
