Hi folks, as of late I am on a budget in the realm of all things G2 toy wise
self imposed but for a few months more at least while I work on paying off my hospital bills, dang ankle will take not just my mobility but my toys
could be worse!
BUT I digress, as I said that to say this, since I missed traveling down to visit our friends in Titusville PA at the GEC open house recently, I was jonesin for a small traditional folder, had in mind a stockman but a sowbelly had always interested me, never used one but they look cool. SO, since I had done the Prime thing on Amazon, small splurge but I think worth it as I catch up on some shows from them too, I checked for Sowbelly knives and found this one that was at the time part of the Prime free two day shipping. At the time it was about $9 and looked like it'd be worth it to check out, also Prime has easy returns if it looked like a basket case. Luckily it wasn't a basket case, all three blades have very nice snap, moderate to strong blade pull, we're talking smaller blades so less leverage for you to pull them open.
It's from a company called Rite Edge, offshore which I know will put some people off, on a budget and looking for a small user, it might fill a certain need.
Closed length is 3"
Main blade, clip point measures a little over 2"
Both smaller blades, Spey and Coping are about 1.3"
When open the main blade and spey have flush back springs, while the coping blade is slightly proud above the liners, not awkwardly so but you can see and feel it. And there are three back springs.
There is very little to no side to side play on any of the blades.
All three had some kind of edge on them, but a short while on the stones and they took a pretty nice edge.
The coping blade was the one I figured to be my main user, as a box opener, slices through cardboard great with very little risk of harming the contents as your control is very good with the handle shape and shorter blade.
As you'll see in the images the blades while open line up with the flow of the spine of the handle, in other words they look right to my eyes. Where on other folders like the Peanut, I modded it so the blade opened a bit straighter, in this case that wouldn't be necessary.
Now the steel says stainless, liners are also steel with not too bad jigged bone scales. The medallion is inset pretty nicely too, cleanly done.
I don't know how long the blades will keep their razor edge, I sliced through some cardboard and still had cleanly cut pinter paper afterwards, for moderate daily use it appears they should be ok.
On to the photos;
I did soften the back side of the coping blade, being so short it was pretty pointy at the spine just up from the tip, so a slight rounding helps that not to dig into you during cutting;
Funny when I checked on Amazon the next day, it was no longer in the Prime category and had a price of $3.49 and shipping of $4.54
go figure eh???
There are Sowbelly folders with a LOT more blades to them but this three bladed is thick enough with enough blade styles to suit me, hope this helps you guys and gals out that may be looking to scratch that itch but need to wait on your discretionary funds to build up again.
