...am I the only one saddened by Spark's decision to toss out the weath of historical information contained in some of the older posts on this forum like so much garbage? Deleting everything over 3 years old will wipe out some very interesting and informative material here, and I'm sure on at least a few other selected forums as well.

I do agree Tribal knowledge is something that should be kept,
but on the hand the amount of space it requires may be the
problem. I dont know the answer but It seems that others
here have started to copy this information down and keep it
in a log for those who need it. This may be the way to go?

It seems like a shame to me too. I thought the whole "archive" thing gave us those benefits (text-only, not included in regular forum search).

Paul, I'm running a script now to download the stuff. Once I have it, I'll think of a way to share it again, and make it searchable. Priority first is to safely store the info.
I've posted the script on the other thread in service & support. It pulls the pages from here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/archive/index.php

The Spyderco forum is safe - now working on the Spyderco Archive

Spyderco & Spyderco Archive are downloaded.
If you want them, e-mail, PM or reply here, and I can e-mail them to you. But, you need to be able to handle large mails in your mailbox (18MB and 6MB). I don't have enough webspace left to host them.

Ah, Ted to the rescue! I'll send you a PM. I've been here since the beginning and I'd hate to see all the really good old stuff be lost.

Thanks,

Wouter

Thanks to Ted, ZIP files of this forum, and the Spyderco Forum Archive in html format are now available for download from my website, HERE The archive file is large (about 6 MB), and the forum file VERY large (about 17 MB), and we will be trying in the future to make at least the archive and older posts from here available online and searchable, so you may want to hold off unless you have immediate need for the data.

Ted and Paul

Thanks for ensuring ongoing access to the information that many of us consider very valuable!

David

Ted, Paul, thanks to you my EDC is:

Micarta Caly Jr
Lime Jester
USB Thumbdrive with 6 years of Spyderco Forum Archives :D

Awesome, simply awesome.

You guys kick butt.

By the way I agree with you Paul. This stuff shouldn't be deleted.

Cheers,
David :)

Thanks for backing everything up guys. As others have said, this info is too valuable to be lost.

Many thx as well. I'll download at home (might get the IT guys on my butt if I download "unrelated" material) and then stuff it on a CD. I agree - past info is much too valuable. After all, I learned pretty well everything off these forums :D

has anyone proposed keeping the "Top 40" threads from each year? (of the years being deleted)
they could be locked and retained, while all the other threads are deleted.
minimal database impact, while keeping some nuggets.
