After looking around for a long time, I found the Cold Steel Black Rhino. I love the knife, but I have a problem with its size. For carrying it around, or while using it outside, it is just fine, but for some finer work/everyday cutting boxes and such its a little on the large size.

What would it cost to have someone re-create this knife in a scaled down version? (I would supply my CS:BR as a template) I was thinking something in the 2.5-3" range instead of the 4.25" size.

I don't think it would be ethical for any maker to copy a design from another maker or company, unless there was an agreement between the maker & original designer/maker/company.

Best Regards,
Nick

I second that. Plus most custom makers don't really like copying designs anyway, as it kinda kills the creative process. My only other suggestion is to grind your knife down to a more usable size. I think there are some guys around who can do that for ya.

In the world of custom slipjoints, everybody copies patterns, such as the Remington bullet. Tony Bose gives away his patterns, for example you can get a "backpocket", a Bose design, from a number of makers on this forum, plus it's a new production knife from Case.

In the world of tacticool, there must be at least 5 clones of Terzuola's ACTF made by custom makers. How many copy Loveless? Copying patterns, locks, etc. is part of knife history, legend and lore, and is a generally accepted practice. Lynn Thompson, founder/owner of Cold Steel copies other designs, with credit, such as Loveless, and gives credit and pays royalties when there is a patent (e.g. spyderco integral clip).

I agree, I wouldn't worry about styling a knife to be similar. If I made knives, I'd just give him the price... there is no ethical conundrum here.

Actually, even in the Cold Steel ad for the BR, it mentions that is is their interpretation of a standard pattern. It is not a unique design they would feel a need to protect. It is a beefed up version of a folding hunter. Slimming it back down would be logical, and some custom makers may even have similar models in their repertoire.

Yeah, I was not asking anyone to reproduce it, but rather create a shrinked down variety using a similar drop point design. I like two different knife designs, unfortunately one is a fixed blade. I would still like to carry the BR, but I would like slimmed down version for EDC and looking around I don't see anything similar.

I would like something ala the Small Sebenza when compared to its large brother. Cold steel made 3 different Spadas but I don't like the knife design and even the smallest one is still kind of large.

I would like something similar (doesn't have to be identical) to the BR. As a matter of fact, I would probably prefer different scales (either real or faux ivory). I would like it to have a lock back and still be on the beefy side, just shorter in overall length. Like I said, 1-1.5" shorter.

Something like this is also nice.

Your right, I was kinda referring to the size/shape. Not necessarily fancy like that nor does it have to have Damascus. Maybe, I will just shop around some custom knives till I find what I like.
