On Milie and Emerson....

Hello everybody!

I've got mixed feelings.

Recently I bought a Spyderco Military (black handle, regular blade). Overall, I love the knife. Although, I found some stuff different: knife handle seems huge to me, knife protrudes a lot from the pocket when clipped... So I can't make myself to start using the knife.

So, my concern is, does it worth to change it to an Emerson; CQC-7 specifically? I think they are similar in many ways, but I never handled any Emersons, and got Military by 'blind date'.

Should I use Military?
Should I change it to something else?
Should I get Emerson?

Thanks a lot!

I thought it was huge at first too, as a matter of fact, I decided to pass on it the first time I held one, however once I bought one and started carrying it, the huge size of the handle seems to lessen more and more until you don't really notice it. I'd say carry it, the more you do the more you'll like it.

The standard Millie is not expensive relatively speaking and it carries much smaller than it appears. For the simple fact that you already own the Military and it's readily available, meaning not a safe queen, you should carry it and use it. It's one of the finest overall EDC's for it's size going today. The Emerson is not a deep carry knife either.

The large handle and long, fine tipped blade of the Military are extremely useful and make for knife with a variety of uses. I had a CQC-7V and I liked but apart from tip down only on the Millie (which doesn't bother me at all) I can't see why you would consider getting the Emerson in favor of the Military you have already. But it's you who has to carry the knife so do what you think you need to do :) Personally, I think you get more knife for less money in the Spyderco :)

Here are the specs one below the other:

Military:

Hole Diameter: 9/16"
Cutting Edge: 3.69"
Blade Thickness: 5/32"
Blade Steel: CPM-S30V
Weight: 4.2 oz.
Handle: G-10

Emerson CQC-7:
Specifications:
Overall Length: 8"
Blade Length: 3.3"
Blade Edge: Chisel Grind, Plain
Handle Length: 4.65"
Blade Thickness: .125", 57-59 RC
Lock: Aerospace grade Titanium
Weight 3.8 oz.

Thanks a lot. I can't say better than this:

“Open, close, cut, clean, oil, cut, cut, cut... To a Spyderco, that is living. Letting it die in the box is to lose 75% of what we put into it." -----Sal Glesser

Anyways, thanks for persuading me to use my Military. ;)

I own multiples of both and the knives could not be anymore different. In fact, the only similarities are they have G10 and are made in the US. Also both knives do not ride low in the pocket. The reason the pocket clip sits where it does is to allow you to get a solid grip on the knife when you pull it out of your pocket. Put on a leather work glove, reach into your pocket and see how long it takes you to pull out a pen that is not clipped to your pocket.

The handle on the military is large to accomodate a gloved hand. It's not a knife for just anyone. It's designed for a specific demographic, with large hands. The liner lock is steel, not titanium, the grind is full flat for slicing, it's a modified drop point and not a chisel ground tanto, you have a 4" blade instead of 3.xx on the 7. none of the design features on either knife are accidental, they were all engineered for specific applications.

I dunno, I don't have large hands, but the Millie works fine for me.

I own both Millie (two of them) and CQC-7. For my purposes, the Military is a better knife for the types of uses I have for a knife.

The Military is a great knife, but it may not fit your usage. It is big, the long handle makes it a great outdoor knife when you have gloves on. I would keep it and buy another smaller and tough knife, like the Gayle Bradley.

Swap your Mili for a Paramilitary 2 = Win!

Sounds like you like the knife, it's just a little too large. So that's the solution I would offer.

Listen to this man. ^^^My wife was a co-dependent partner in my knife-collecting until she got her Paras. They ruined her for all other blades, despite my best rationalizing. If you want all the best features of the Millie in the CQC7's size (with a stouter lock thrown in) you need a Para. The blue M390 model is worth the extra bucks from what I've seen so far.

Seriously, keep your millie and get a PM2 on the exchange for $90 and have the best of both worlds. I have owned a PM2 for a while and absolutely love it. It is a perfect knife for EDC in my opinion. But, now that I have a military, I think the PM2 is borderline small:) Anyway, I resisted getting a military for a long time and recently picked one up. I can say, that it carries very well for the size and that extra length really does come in handy at times. Also, it seems to be a knife that just wants to work work and work some more. I have handled a couple Emersons. I know this won't be particularly popluar but I think they are ok but the construction seems questionable. (Steel screws into titanium, etc). I am sure they have proven themselves over the years fine but the examples that I held didn't impress me on any level. I had a completely different reaction to the military. Just my thoughts. Oh, and since the PM 2 was brought up, here are three of the best spydercos money can buy:)

Steel screws into Titanium has been around for about 25 years.
Benchmade Stryker, 760, Subrosa, etc.
Chris Reeve Folders
Rick Hnderer Knives
Zero Tolerance Knives
Spyderco (Ti Military)
Kershaw modelslike the Tilt, Volt, Speedform, etc.
Boker models like the Epicenter
On and on.

I get that Rev. Maybe it is the fact that the titanium liners are thinner than the the frame locks you mentioned. I don't know, it is all speculation on my part but it just doesn't seem like a super robust design.

get the para 2. better lock, better lanyard hole, better handle length, better pocket clip options.

Have a Millie and a CQ7(Benchmade) The Millie is a great knife but a bit big for my hands, I have a Para 2 on order. The CQ7 is a nice knife but a bit over rated IMO.

This is a recurring theme here lately. Someone comes on asking about this or that folder & ends up with a dozen recommendations to buy a Para 2. There should be a sticky made up on it that we can link to.
