when I go to close my caly 3 is that loud *snap* the blade hitting the bottom of the knife? or is it the back lock snapping against the pivot? the more I do it the more I keep thinking the blade is hitting the bottom hard and making a loud sound. I hope its not the blade, can anyone clarify this?

Yes, and no. It's the kick, which is the small projection on the tang of the blade behind the edge and in front of the choil, hitting the lock spring. That's what acts as the closed position blade stop on a midlock.

I seriously doubt any knife made by Spyderco is going to have the blade hitting any part of the knife when closed.

As cheap as they are, I would not even expect that of a CRKT knife.

so the knife is not being hit at all right?

CRKT knives suck I use to buy them and they fall apart in the first 2 days.

They suck, absolutely. I've never had one fall apart though. They just do not hold an edge worth a damn and I'll never own another.

I bought 2 nirk tighe CRKTs first day of using it and the blade was about to fall off. It had the worst blade play I have ever seen on a knife and it costed like $85 for that knife.
and I never liked the cheap AUS-4 steel they use on most of there knives.

What is this thread about anyway? I doubt Sal would like bad mouthing another manufacturer in his sub forum.

The edge is not being contacted. What is defined as a knife behind the edge differs from culture to culture and person to person. Deacon is correct.

The cutting edge of the blade is not hitting any other part of the knife, which is what I assume you mean, since it's the only form of contact that would be inappropriate. Obviously, some part of the blade must hit, and remain in contact with, some part of the knife body when any folding knife is closed. Otherwise, the blade would be able to rotate in a complete circle.

What? I have plenty of spydercos, and I havnt noticed any of the blades hitting the knife...at all. I'm seriously confused by this.
