Recently I have had much curiosity for a custom WSK knife and with all the choices out there, I decided to go with Roger Linger.
I've noticed much debate about this sort of knife and many are people unsure of who to go with or what knife style works best. I hope this helps.

I have recently been contacted by Roger and must say WOW! What a guy!

First off, he e-mailed me some basic answers to my questions, as more questions arose form me, he shot me over his phone number (sorry I will not give out any of his personal or buisness info. so don't ask, e-mail him and be patient). I tried to qroup my questions together to sound prepared and not to waste his time, assuming it would be a 5 min conversation. I just got off a 40 min. conversation with him about his work and the WSK. He was very helpful to me (know that I am a newbie with limited knowledge of custom knives) he answered all of my questions, was very straightforward with what to expect from him and let me know that I was free to call with any concerns. I was shocked at how warm and personable he was to me.

Anyone wanting to purchase a WSK from him must know that he is very busy (many people want this knife from him)and they must be patient with him. I believe him to be an honorable man with a huge workload under him. As they say you get what you pay for, and when it comes to custom knives, time is part of the payment. Many people may complain about how long would would take to have a custom knife made, but if it is a handcrafted knife, wouldn't you want him to take his time and get it right for you? That said, understand the fact that you are not the only one on the list .. and you got yourself quite a wait. For me, it is all worth it, it's not like I won't have other knives of interest while waiting. So decifer for yourself if you want a quality knife that is handmade with care. Yet, If you don't mind a 'production' quality knife and are looking for something thats lighter on your checkbook and is shipped upon purchase, then this option is not for you.

I have a TOPS tracker as well, to me not a bad knife at all and I will keep it, yet I wanted more. For my money, I am willing to wait and pay extra for a handcrafted custom WSK. I feel honored and lucky that my first custom knife will be from Roger Linger.

Bottomline, way your options, and if you feel that you want to go custom I feel Roger is a great choice, just be patient and be sure that it is the road you want to travel. Now gotta go, I have to decide what kinda options I want for my WSK!!!

You had a great conversation, and feel good about the maker. Schweet.

The best time to make a post like this is post-delivery.

I can't tell you how many great chats I have had with a maker, pre-delivery, only to have problems down the line.

In short, you are premature.

PS, unless I am sorely mistaken, Los Angeles is spelled Los Angeles and not Los AngelAs

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Roger makes a very sought after version of the WSK. From what I have read on the GB&U forum you are indeed going to have a fairly long wait for the knife. It sounds like you have been informed of this by Roger and that is good. It is when the maker doesn't inform his customers that there is going to be a long wait that problems can arise.

I wouldn't be shocked with a maker being warm and personable. Most of the ones I have talked are incredibly nice guys.

HA! You are right on both accounts, Los Angeles is spelled . . well ahh . . Los AngelEs . .a misspelling that is second nature to me . . and premature I am and have been many of times (just ask my girl) . .but call me an old fashion 32 year old who still believes in the power of people's words, I feel confident it will work itself out. It wasn't like he made unrealistic promises or anything that made me jump up and say, "Hey I am the luckiest idiot in Los AngelASS!!"

Again, I felt I got exactly what I was looking for as far a potential customer, and I feel I know what I can expect from a business standpoint.

True, many things can happen from now until then, and problems may occur, but this is true in all forms of business. What, however, is not always true is the personal touch he gave to me, and honesty that could have easily have been hidden from me. I understand what you are saying and this post was not meant to place a shrine in his favor, but rather let others know my humble opinion on my dealing with him. I felt that this could be helpful to others as I know I was not the only one trying to contact him or considering to deal with him.

I appreciate your feedback, and won't count my chickens before they are put on the chopping block, minced, breaded, frozen, fried, served 10 minutes past 'too long' and packaged with my sweet and sour sauce.

Thank you . .and the way of the warrior is not a dying art. . .it just a path many have forgotten, because some dumb ass decided to put a skyscraper there.. . .yeah I don't even know what that means.

Hey there Dr. Sleuth (MARK), I am not Roger Linger, Don't know how else to prove it to ya, nor do I think I need to, yet if you are curious to see who I am check this site www.myspace.com/s9s, here you will see pics of me my girlfriend and friends, you'll see that I am a 32 year old guy named Pierce (don't ask why, it's a nick name) who likes star wars, also click search here, then go under advanced search, go to the box where you can enter my name (Stephan) then click on posts that I have done and you will see that I have started a number of threads where I am asking about various things like,

Understanding Steel

Learning to Sharpen my Collection

Custom Trackers (here I am asking about how to get a hold of Roger Linger)
and other threads that clearly suggest that I am a GREEN newbie here who doesn’t know much.

In short, if this was some sort of elaborate ruse to fool people created by Roger Linger, who in reality, everyone has only ever said is an honest guy, then it would, make little sense to ask about metals and such. Also, Roger has little time to do such a thing, nor would it interest him.

So just relax and if you are serious on getting a knife then contact him, be patient and make a your choice . . . don't think everything is such a scam and do research.

Good Luck to you!

No big deal. I just see a lot of doubt around this hole issue with him, which is why I posted this in the first place to help people like yourself understand what it maybe like dealing with him. When all is said and done, it's still a long wait, but as I 've said before . . well I already said it up there.

So What did you mean By $2000, it that what you are spending?

Stephan...
I think you are a heck of a guy for coming on here and expressing your honest feelings about your interaction with a custom maker. I am very new to this world myself and can understand exactly where you are coming from. In fact, my first custom knife was a Roger Linger WSK. Before purchasing from Roger I had purchased a TOPS Tracker also. All I can say is that Roger is a heck of a guy, as are many other custom makers on this site. I have never found such an awesome place with great people to interact with than Blade Forums. I have a lot of respect for the community here.

You are right Stephan. Be patient with your knife. I stand by Roger's work 100%. I have seen his works in progress and they are without a doubt some of the finest works I have seen. He truly takes his time to make the knives the best. Not only that, Roger is down to earth. He is there to listen and help you as much as he can. Good to hear you are on board for your own custom WSK. Be very patient and I assure you, you will be very pleased. In the mean time, check out some of the other fine work these Blade Forums characters offer as well. Top Notch crowd! -Damion

Stephan,
I do own a Roger Linger WSK also. I couldn't have been happier with the produsct or the sevice!!! But the wait is what kills me as well as most others. You just hang in there. And remember, Roger is a very busy guy. His version Of the WSK, as well as his other customs are pretty popular these days. I've said it before..."I WILL puchase another custom from Roger Linger!"

Roger's work is TOP SHELF. Hope you like what you are getting. He and Dave Beck have truly been an inspiration throughout the knife making community. Glad you are so excited and enthusiastic, that is what it is all about anyway.

Well, it's been awhile and I thoght I drop in to officially say that I have been ripped off by roger linger as others have stated. I have given him plenty of time to make the knife I payed for and I have no more comunication or responses from him

It was against my better judgement to send the money to him upfront but he had a great line of bs and I fell for it. Just putting it out there in case he's still fishing for new people to steal from.

I learned a valuable lesson and will never do such a thing again. I plan to take legal action against him and hopefully get the money back. I know Im not The only one, and if anyone would like to join me in this then contact me and maybe we can work together. I have a few ideas.

Sorry Roger, thought you were a good guy but you did this to yourself. You've had plenty of time as it's been over 3 years.

I do have to say that I like what you've been doing with your buissness Resdscorpion6.

I haven't stumbled across this post ever before, but am I the only one who finds Steven's advice, not just correct, but eerily correct?
If anyone has their finger on the pulse of this scene, it's that Garsson fellow.
Must be some strange 'knife voodoo' going on down there:thumbup:

Esav thanks for he heads up, although I have no plans of spending money on any knives as of yet. I've been Away from here for quite some time so haven't looked into his banned issue.

Lorien, Even though I have lost money and time on Roger I plan to loose more on pursuing this issue. He needs to answer for his actions.

I just need to save up for a plane trip and make the time. Law is always by our side even if it dosent make it easy on us.

It's pretty simple, Lorien....we have all made mistakes. Sometimes we learn from them.

If you want someone to tell you what you want to hear, they mostly will. This includes members of the opposite sex, politicians and people who want to sell you something.

I research makers with the same interest as savvy investors looking at a new business to invest in. Who is getting divorced? Who has a reputation for shady business or personal practice? This is my "discovery or due diligence" phase. If enough dirt piles up, I won't go near the maker, or if it shows up post delivery...the work gets dumped.

This was the case with both John Fitch and with Mike Obenauf, and no money was lost on either piece, because it was the "right" time to sell.

When contacting a maker for a handmade knife, I always tell them...."don't tell me what you think I want to hear....tell me what you think is the truth" as far as ability to meet my requests and delivery date. Am usually pleased with the results.

The OP wrote ....."call me an old fashion(sic) 32 year old who still believes in the power of people's words, I feel confident it will work itself out." This is what the OP wanted to believe.

It isn't voodoo, and it isn't luck so much either.....it is common sense, and a willingness to view the situation somewhat objectively, rather than emotionally.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
