I use my Spyderco Sharpmaker for most all my sharpening precedures... however I've never tried to sharpen a recurve blade on this.

If I use the sharpmaker in the same maner as I do my 'straight/slightly curved' type of blades, will it work or no?

If not, any suggestions?

thanks.

To sharpen any recurved blade on the Sharpmaker, use only the corners of the stones, not the flats. It'll work fine. I do it all the time.;)

Maybe I am out to lunch on this but I sharpen my Kukris and other recurved blades with regular diamond stones. They work like a round/ edged sharpener but there are actually 2 points of contact on the stone. This works well for me and does not seem to add time or hardship to the job.

I have one of the TORMEK grinders which is a wet grinder which operates at low RPMs ( 90) and controls very easily. I took one of my TORMEK stones and with a diamond truing tool I rounded off a radius on the right side of the stone. With that set up I find that sharpening recurves is not only easy but easy to control the amount of stock removal and easy to keep the original the factory contour of the recurve.

As far as manual hand sharpening units go I don't see how you can beat the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker. You definitely want to watch the video/DVD that comes with the Sharpmaker. You truly can pick up a lot of tips/tricks to the proper use of the unit.

But The TORMEK is the ultimate best IMO.
