My brother sent me this as an email and I felt like a lot of people around here would really appreciate it. It kind of brings to light why we do what we do, why we train and why we are always prepared for everything, even if we get made fun of for it. I would like to think I am a sheepdog.

This is the only place I could find it online, but here you go.

On Sheep, Sheepdogs, and Wolves.

An interesting read. If my advice means anything, I'd say you've got to be a mix of all three "types".

Lt.Col. Grossman has some good stuff, he has some books out there too. After my time in the Corps I sat down and read "On Killing", something I wish I had read in high school or sometime before going overseas.

ETA: His work is a must-read for any Law Enforcement, and military types, heck even EMT's. Should encourage others in your professions to read it, it's a lifestyle that SHOULD accompany those professions. IMO

This was great. I've already forwarded the link to it to my friends. Thanks. We are all law enforcement. Our wives have all finally come to grips with the fact we carry even if we are only taking the trashcan to the curb.

Now read "The Unthinkable" who survives and why by Amanda Ripley. We never know hat is inside of us, till the wolf is at the door.

I think some people may not understand the definition of idealism. I thought his piece was overtly realist and definitely hit the mark.

Good article, Wanderlust. May I link another article I think concerns this issue? I think it's good, too:

TRIBES

Mods let me know if it's OK, please.

I am glad everybody is liking the article, I know it is really long but it is a worth while read. Thanks for all of the links and book suggestions (Right Henrey44 its a book correct?), I will be looking into all of them. I have to head out to work right now but I will be reading them later.

That’s been around for a long time. Heinlein had a similar theme going in the book Starship Troopers, which is not to be confused with the movie.

Dave Grossman is a big name in the gun community. His book "On Combat" is a great read.

Just finished reading it. Thanks so much for posting the link. I can't wait to share it with my family.
