I'm a newbie in the knife culture and have just got my first BARKIE! Its a fingerling and I got in an austion up here in Canada. Need some help, What kind of steel is it? Is it easy to sharpen?( Have a Lanksky set, crock sticks and a tri angle sharpener) Any one out there have one? I'll use it for my hunting knife, and relly looking forward to getting it in my hands. Its used but looks quite good in the picture.
Any advice for this first bark river owner, Thanks Jim:D

The steel is 50 100B. It will sharpen easily and hold a good edge.

It is convex ground. Do not use a Lansky. Use wet-dry on leather or a stiff mousepad. Maintain on a loaded strop.

Most Bark River blades are made of A2 Tool steel, a great steel that is very tough, easy to sharpen and holds an egde pretty well, but you need to take care of it as it is not exactly stainless steel. My 1st Barkie was a Canadian Camp, a pure camping beast, love it!

Welcome to the forums. Barkies have a convex grind from spine to edge and are really best optimized by sharpening appropriately. Of course, you can use a Lansky and put a v-grind edge on the knife, but that is essentially converting a really great edge to an okay edge.

Use google or other tools to search for mousepad/sandpaper method for sharpening a convex edge. This will give you some idea of the sharpening techniques. Finish off with a leather strop. Check out the maintenance subforum area for more advice on the method.

Again welcome, its nice to see a few more Canuks showing up around here!
