Just a newbie here about to make a purchase on a NIB 3rd Gen 3.5" flipper or should I hold out fot a NIB custom as my first Hinderer? The custom models are $1k new I take it ? Knowing myself I may eventually own a few of these down the road but just undecided as if I should wait for a custom to pop up for sale or not...thanks for all you seasoned guys advice on here.

If you plan to get more down the road anyway (which you undoubtedly will after handling one) why not go ahead and buy the production now?

It really comes down to what you want, but if you have the means to pick one up now, with the option of getting more later, you'd be nuts not to go for it. I think everyone who can, should own one of these.

Be warned though, it will spoil you for all other knives. I sold most all my other non Hinderer folders after getting a couple XM's. You'll ask yourself "What's the point in having them?", as they'll sit around uncarried and unused.

What he said.

We don't really talk about secondary market pricing here but you will not find a custom anywhere near the price you mentioned going that route. Your best bet is going to a knife show and crossing your fingers.

Cake or Pie. Can't go wrong either way.

Production knife: You will be likely to actually use it and gain an appreciation for the knife. End result? You will buy more.

Custom: You will gaze upon it (not likely use it) gain an appreciation for the knife. End result? You will buy more.

I buy and use production models. I keep an open eye and mind on the customs. If opportunity presents itself, at a show in the future, who knows? If you are going to use it, I suggest starting with a production model.

Theyre all awesome. Cant go wrong with any of them. That being said... I like carrying customs.

I much prefer my custom just because it's hand-ground by Rick and he does some of the best grinds that I've seen.

The factors (design elements) that make the Hinderer a unique and exceedingly capable tool are ALL included in the basic XM of anyones size and blade geometry choice among several other "options".
To actually carry (Use) a Custom is certainly the right and choice of the owner BUT, I personally don't see the logic.
Granted, much of knife collecting is anything but logic driven, quite the opposite. Emotion plays a pivotable role in collecting but, carrying? Using?
Like I said, anybodys choice but I wouldn't be carrying, using and sharpening a custom. If one of my Sons came to me and asked me my opinion about what to do or not to do - that's what I'd tell them in the form of advice.
