On the fence RE: Cold Steel Large Talwar
Even though I make knives I still purchase factory stuff from time to time. Lately CS Large 5.5" Blade Serrated has caught my attention as a decent Mall Ninja Truck knife
Any current owners want to chime in on Cutting ability Usability Etc>>>
Like big blade folders

Personally, I would for for the XL Recon 1 clip point. I have one of the regular sized Recon 1 CP knives and it's been a really good beater knife. The heat treat they run on them makes for decent performance out of AUS8. It too like large blade folders.

Recon 1 XL Clip Point is boss level...

That's awesome, just for the cool factor if nothing else. You crack me up, "little bit of a larger knife"!
Thanks for sharing that, I'm digging your videos.

There is also the old Rajah 2. For size reference the clip under it is an XL, which in itself is a handfull.

I own most of the big Cold Steel knives, and have thought about getting the Talwar. But really, what do you do with it after you buy it? That blade shape is really meant for one thing, and I don't do much of that. Its a cool knife, and the fondling factor may be worth the price of admission, but if I got one I don't think it would see much real world usage.

Definitely love my CS knives, but I came across the SOG Pentagon ii from a great friend and forum member and I gotta say, for about the same money you get 5 inches of vg-10 steel and an arc lock, not to mention ultra smooth and fast opening.
Next to a Recon 1.

I have got one and it is really nice, but not really practical (I am sure you knew that already). The thing is really high quality for the price and super light weight for the size. Mine was razor sharp, but I picked it up used. It "waves" out of the pocket fairly reliably, but does take up a lot of pocket real estate. Over all I really like it. I have owned the Espada, and currenlty own the Spartan, and of the three the Talwar is my favorite. I would prefer the stonewashed finish to the stain one on mine, but its still very nicely done and light-years ahead of the bead blast that was on the Espada I had. I havent cut much with mine (plain edge), but I didn't by it for utility reasons and would anticipate the same levels of edge retention as similar knives. I guess if you are a Cold Steel fan, and like large folders, get one, you wont be disappointed.

That's the thing. I have several over sized C.S. folders also.....and don't use them. They were initially bought for giggles n shnitz and maybe a peripheral view toward self defense in an extreme location. But really, after the third or fourth a guy starts to see their lack of utility.

Would be carried with one purpose in mind;)
There have been several times walking back to the car in a poorly lit parking lot with the wife where we were approached.
Felt naked just grabbing my longest keys and making an impromtu knuckle duster. However every time they backed off and took the long way around.
Pays to not look like a victim!
Quick flick and the snap of a 5.5" blade if that doesn't stop them the trip to the ER won't be fun either...

the xl talwar is a really cool knife, and the asking price usually isnt that high.

if you are carrying it for protection though, the only issue i have is that the 5+ inch cold steel knives are harder for me to open than the 4 inch models. the extra size does make the knife a bit more clumsy to open, for me at least. the 4 inch talwar and voyagers are easier and quicker to open, and they still provide a large size blade. however, the xl talwar can be wave opened due to the thumbdisk, though im not a fan of waved opening personally due to the position it puts the knife in my hand, i still have to adjust after pulling it out.

my talwar xl sits at home while the 4 inch gets carried often. i sanded down the rough g10 handles and made them smoother and it feels much nicer.

Exactly. If you like the talwar, you'll love the recon xl... And it doesn't look like a Klingon blade!

May have to get both although Wave open and snag on the pocket deployment is appealing
