Two thousand seven hundred and fifty nine years ago, The City of Rome was founded by Romulus of Alba Longa, son of the God Mars and a Vestal Virgin, Rhea Silvia.

As Vestal Virgins were required to remain chaste, Rhea Silvia was sentenced to die, and was therefore unable to raise her twin sons. As a wargod, of course, Mars never takes responsibility for any of his offspring. They were exposed on a hillside and raised instead by a wolf.

His brother Remus opposed Rome's foundation, so Romulus killed him. This set the tone for much of Rome's subsequent history.

It was also my Grandad's birthday. Sharing it with Hitler was probably something he didn't like being reminded of whilst he was being bombed at Dunkirk and later serving in the Italian Campaign.

The real story of course is that the Etruscans founded the city of Rome at a time when the romans [ Latins ] were just a small tribe. In time the romans grew in number and eventually defeated and absorbed the etruscans. It was the etruscans who taught the romans about engineering and many other things but they never gave the etruscans any credit !! Tuscany of course was the center of the etruscan civilization. See "The Etruscans" by Werner Keller , 1974

The Romans weren't a tribe. They were named after their city, not vice versa. They were a mixed group of Latins (plainsmen) who gathered in the otherwise unhealthy hill country among the swamps of the lower Tiber. The Etruscans, dominant in the area, took over the City for a while after it became a growing concern.

The Romans absorbed the other Latins easily, but wiped the Etruscans out so thoroughly we don't even know their language. There isn't enough of it left to analyze.

Yesterday was also 4:20, everyone's favorite holiday, although it lacks the sheer drunken exuberance of a proper Passover.

And, incidentally, the day Jimmy Carter was attacked by a rabbit while canoeing.
