Once again about ZDP-189 "Brittleess"

I am using my Yuna Hard for anything. So far it was drywall, aluminum screen, roots in dirt with some gravel and today I used it for cutting plastic glass and aluminum corners. It was not like cutting them on half but like whittling off burrs after roto-zip and straightening cuts to fit into cabinet.

And again no any evidence of "evil brittleness", no cheeps. Of course edge is slightly damaged, but it is less then I have on carbon steel or any other steel after cutting aluminum corners.

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili, do you have an appx. hardness number Yuna does their knives at? Is the steel pushed hard, or kind of in the comfort zone like Spydercos? Thanks, Joe

Last year I was one of the ones who were speculating that ZDP would end up proving to be brittle. I hang my head in shame:o. I've had a ZDP knife (Caly 3) and had no issues with the steel at all. And now I want one of those damn Yuna knives pretty badly. Keep us updated Vassili:thumbup:

Let me tease you a bit...

Thanks, Vassili.

And it takes 20-30 minutes to restore it without even going to D8XX...

Thanks, Vassili.

I have had some chipping issues on a zdp Calypso jr. After some sharpening sessions all is right; i use that knife on hardwood, ropes, cardboards and have even tried it with success on 2mm wire without any damage. I wonder if the heat treatment has some influence on the edge brittleness. When the "bad steel" is removed, brittleness disappears. What do you think about?

Zdp 189 is often said hard to sharpen. I don't have noticed that. With a coarse DMT it doesn't take me much more time to sharpen the zdp version than to sharpen the vg10 one of the Calypso jr.

Your Yuna knife looks great, congrats. Can we hope to read a review?

I have 2 knives in ZDP-189 and had not problems with either. As to the sharpening. It is FAR AND AWAY the stainless steel I LOVE to sharpen the most. It takes such a sweet edge so easily, it is like a carbon steel. There are no burr issues no flopping around wire edge, and it takes a nice polish. I think people confuse re-profiling and sharpening. It has a pretty high wear resistance so re-profiling takes more time than some other steels, but I think it is still easier to re-profile than S30V and again, the sharpening afterwards is pur bliss.

I did some review this Febrary here - can not find it - search is locked.

Knife is just wonderful! Highly recommend Yun Trisak who made it. I use it a lot for last 6 months on anything and it takes all abuses and did the all jobs done and continue to please me and enjoy its beauty and ergo.

Thanks, Vassili.

Agreed!

I am sending one of my Caly 3's in ZDP to Tom Krein here pretty soon. I sent him one of my Caly Jr.s a year or so ago. You really have to use it to believe it, it's that good.

Thanks to you I just asked for pricing info on the Hard1 knife. I've been seriously thinking of getting my second custom and Yuna was one of the knife makers at the top of my list.

I'll probably go ahead and get one of his knives. I'm sure the price will be going up pretty soon as more people begin to realize how nice his knives are.

Where's all the howling about scientific testing?

Ha! I been watched...

Scientific police is here! On your knee, give up all you heretical unscientific thoughts and pray Science!

Thanks, Vassili.

That is a sweet knife.

This is a post where some folks have given us their impressions from actually using this steel in everyday use. Cutting soft metal is a useful demonstration for how some use a knife. This is good information based on real use about a steel that has taken some criticism for being too brittle for some uses.

Your comment sounds like a snide remark about a something previously posted. If you are still so upset about some past thread, maybe you should address your issues in that thread instead of posting snide remarks in this thread.

Hey Vassili,

I just ordered a large Hard 1. I've been wanting one for awhile now and this thread pushed me to take some action. Thanks!

Congratulation! I really use it for everything (root in the ground, drywall, aluminum - everything) - kind of proving myself that it does worse what it coasts and so far I have no regrets.

Only modification I made - I change washers from original teflon to phosphor bronze one I got from JYDII it turns out pretty well.

I would also say that blade shape make it very easy to sharpen with one simple move.

This is kind of design which surprises you even in a long run after like 6 months - I found one or other thing being convenient.

I am waiting for smaller one myself to kind of complete set...

Thanks, Vassili.

I also hope that ZT will finally pay attention to my calls to use Yun design and may be make ZT700 or something from HARD2 - will be perfect fit.

Why did you switch the washers? Did you not like the original ones? I'd love a small one myself, but since I can only get one right now I had to go with my regular EDC size. The Hard 1 and the XM-18 were the 2 knives at the top of my wish list and I already have the XM-18. I can't wait for my new knife.

Next I'm thinking of a Darrel Ralph Madd Maxx with a 3" blade for my small EDC.
