I did not mean to spread poison to the group.
I have virtually no english speaking buddies I see during the week to talk about my life here and my frustrations.
My experiences in japan are not unique.
I am a terrible hypocrite.
Please never believe anything bad about somebody until you see it with your own eyes.

I am sorry.

I am not saying that what I said isnt true, but perhaps it was not useful.
I hope that at least someone learned that what you see on TV about Japan is not necessarily the truth and that they learn the same about America.

I personally found your comments informative and real. I also enjoyed Iyer's book:

Video Night in Kathmandu : And Other Reports from the Not-So-Far East
by PICO IYER :)

Danny, stop apologizing. EVer noticed honest men could safely spend their entire lives in apology? I think they call such people Priests, or Monks, or something...

(actually, that's wrong- they would act half the time, and apologize for their actions the other half)

But you did show another face to Japan. I knew they had problems. I didn't realize how bad things were.

Danny,

I promise to thrash you soundly when we get together...so stop beating yourself up. :) Really.

At first, I didn't understand DIJ's perspective... But it is much clearer now. No problems here with any of his writings or the need to vent to a 'peer group'.

Danny,

You aren't alone. Some folks that were there where you are 20+ years ago had the same thing to say that you did. As far as english speaking buddies, I for one, am American and very proud to be a friend to you in any way I can.
You don't have anything to apologize for. I gotta tell you, if you keep apologizing you are gonna get annoying though. :D So, just stop it. (kidding) Everyone knows you have a good heart and are human just like the rest of us.

I want to apologize to the group as well.

I didn't do anything wrong either, but thought that he was simply hogging the support group and I want my share.

Alright already -with all this damn male bonding ...sheeeesh!

I appreciate your understanding.
I hope any japanese members of the forum can understand my feelings.

Today, the people of Japan are saying to each other "oh, be careful on the internet. you can get killed using the internet."
(I heard those exact words on the train. I speak japanese, but they dont know that)

there will be no analysis of student-teacher interaction nor security tightening nor removal of razors from elementary school pencil cases.
There will be no changes made in the schools except possibly the restricting of internet-access.

They just blamed it on the internet.

Im still angry and frustrated, but I think I will try to be a little less personally involved when I talk about such things here.

Every day I learn a little more.

Of course, in the US, I'm sure that there are problems we deal with very badly such that the same Japanese would roll their eyes.

I think that, to some extent, we're all the same, but different. For example, we'll often hear about how strict drunk-driving laws are in Germany, and how licensing has more stringent requirements. I once heard that all German cars are required to carry first aid kits. Of course, then they drive just short of the speed of sound on the autobahns. Some things they do are safer, some not so much. It might all work out. I also suspect that every culture has exactly the same number of holidays. (OK, perhaps not exactly, but...) I'm sure they don't celebrate 4th of July in Japan. But I'm sure they have holidays we don't.

Enjoy the differences. And it's a great way to learn/get perspective on what does and doesn't work.

Wrong on holidays!! That's a real danger sign for the US-our average hours of work per week are over 40, and the number of holidays very low compared to other nations and even ancient Rome.

everytime I see one of Danny's "apology" threads...I think: Crap! what's he done now...

Then, I come and read the thread.....

DIJ = I'll exchange cross words with you any day! All full of nice things to say afterwards...:D
