Was looking for my Trusty Shellback card and found the seven layer Swiss Champion that went MIA about a year ago. This was given to me by the then CBS Rome Bureau Chief in Cambodia in 1992 when one of my team's NCOs lost my Sodbuster in the muck of a riverbed we were excavating. It has travelled much of the world with me since I was given it. At least 16 countries in the last 21 years. It's in sad shape.

I'm contacting Vic customer Service later this morning to inquire about shipping it off to them. When I ship it I'll instruct, by letter, NOT to replace the knife itself as it has much sentimental value. I'd rather it just be returned as is than replaced. It's like an old friend. I'll also instruct them NOT to replace the scales and to keep/reuse as many of the original parts as possible.

Will Victorinox oblige/honor my conditions/request?

I've never sent anything back to them before. But I thought the scales are kind of a 1 time use, but I may be way off base there.
I have a scale that has come loose on my Vic Tinker. But it's still very functional. I had one come off on a chinesse knock off before, and it was a friction fit on some studs on the knife. But again I'm no expert. I hope it works out well for you. That's a beautiful SAK.

Rust is plenty wrong with it.

Yes, scales are meant to be one time use; however, a drop of epoxy can overcome the lack of snap. If Vic won't do that, I'll just ask the return the original scales with the knife, and I'll do it.

Did the SAK of that era have a high-polish to the tools as does today's models? If so, I would think that the proper application of solvents and scrubbers, with a crap-load of patience, ought to do the trick for you. :)
