Once upon a time...

There was a company called Bali-song USA... which was later Pacific cutlery, and then was turned into Benchmade. My question is... what about the little details? I there a good source somewhere for researching Benchmade's history? IMHO it'd be interesting to see why they made what decisions they did, what knives they made as a result, etc. (Well, that, and it'd be nice to be able to know the differences between various models)

There is a lot... plenty on manipulations, plenty on common production models, etc.

I guess, to be more specific, I'm looking for more behind-the-scenes type stuff... what worked, more importantly what didn't... what kind of decisions went into making such high-quality stuff, and building a good name for themselves in the industry. Why the name-changes, what put Pacific down, adn gave rise to Benchmade? I'd heard some about Pacific going bankrupt or something, adn the equipment being bought out by Benchmade as some of the key people moved over...

Is there a long-lost article, or series of articles in some knife magazines that will tell the details of the story a little better?

Lothar,

That period of Les's life should remain private. He lost a lot back then and much can be attributed to one person who screwed him over. Les was the driving force behind both companies and he is still in the drivers seat today.

Please do not bring this up on the BM forum. Thanks

OK... I didn't know it was due to personal conflicts or anything like that... I figured it was strictly a business thing. My interest is mainly what makes for a good knife, and what makes for a good knife company... so I wanted to find out more about what made benchmade what it is. I wasn't looking for old wounds, just some sort of a case history to look at.
