While I'd much rather be spending my money on a khukri's, I'm not going to get away with carrying them in Pittsburgh so I need an EDC – but just 1. Folder, fixed blade, it doesn't matter, but it needs to be accessible with lots of layers on.

I like kerambits, and if the knife is gorgeous that's a plus, but mainly I just need a solid, accessible, concealable knife to carry around. While I may eat my words later, I'd like this to be the last "small" knife I buy for a couple of years. Looking to spend <$200.

I would appreciate your advice.

spyderco Manix is nice also. For a fixed blade, the Moran drop point is sweet, small enough to be legal, and comes in a top notch kydex sheath with multiple carry positions. You can get it at ultimate outdoors for 56.85 (the moran that is)

A Roselli "gradmothers knife" small puukko with a forged carbon blade 2 1/2 inches. Gets scary sharp, cuts like a laser, and is about 5 1/2 inches overall. Makes a wicked little neck knife. Available from Kellam knives.

Above all, with the burl birch handle and traditional shape, it is very low profile and sheeple friendly. Most women love it.

I can't think of a knife that would be accessible when I'm wearing layered winter clothing unless its on the outside (then, there goes any discrete carry issues).

Will say those small puukko's are generally wicked sharp.

I think you need a BM 940, good looks, and premium blade steel, and can be carried in any pocket. If you are worried about looks I would not get a Spydie, awesome knives but ugly IMO.

Thank you for all the well-considered replies.

The front runners from what's been mentioned are the paramilitary and Garm G1 - if I go the neck knife route.

On the G1 theme, sort of I've been looking @ stuff from http://www.plan-a.org/mmhw/knives.htm. If I do end up going with a neck knife, if I could shrink some of their stuff by a couple of inches it would be great.

I'm assuming it's unfeasible to carry something like this around your neck? http://www.plan-a.org/mmhw/tactical.htm

Spyderco Pacific Salt.

I was thinking a Spyderco Salt too, but since he said small and concealable my advice is for the Salt I. It's the 3" blade size rather than the 4" blade of the Pacific.

My Pacific Salt is definitely a favorite of mine, but it is not small.

Nothing wrong with a Pukko either, but the Salt's quality of being impervious to the elements sure is a nice feature.
