I've been itchin' to get out and hit something with my new Chopweiler. So, earlier today, I went outside and found some 4"-5" thick deadfall around my property. Took the C'weiler and just started choppin'.

Well, I have to say it brought a big smile to my face. It was biting and spitting chunks like a beast.

As far as chopping, batoning, etc., is there any advantage of stripping the coating? Or is the C'Weiler good 'nuff as is without stripping the coating?

Man, I'm lovin' me some C'Weiler.

Keep the coating brother!!! SR-101 tends to rust quite easily if you don't regularly clean & oil your blade's exposed areas. Plus, I think that coated blades look better after they have had some abuse; just my 2 cents of course. There are benefits to stripping the coating, but they don't outweigh rust protection. You would have a more efficient baton due to the lack of friction from the missing crinkle coat, and it is much easier to clean vegetation residues off of a satin finished blade. However, the look of bare steel peeking through a black, brown, or whatever colored crinkle coat looks really cool :)

Thanks a ton! I'll just let the coating wear off naturally.........from abusing it relentlessly....:D

If you strip it, it might penetrate a tiny bit more on the chop, where the coating will slow a bit with drag, but not much.

As the coating wears down, it will also do the same as the friction decreases.

I do love SR101 stripped and blued, or patina-ed but you do have to watch for the rust. On users, for my rust prone knives, I don't really have a problem, but I don't put them away wet. I force a patina with mustard, and that also cuts down on rust issues.

Here is a pic of the 'Weiler in action (from my original post). The Chopweiler was awesome! I was beyond impressed with it's handling and chopping abilities.

Then, about a week later, I took 5 different blades, including the Chopweiler, and had a little informal, unscientific "Chop-a-tition". To be honest, I was just having fun abusing the blades, but I will say the Chopeweiler held it's own against the other blades quite well.

The other blades were: ESEE Junglas, Busse ASH1 (CG), NMSFNO, Fallkniven A1.
