I was curious about what khukuris do the Indian Army has issued after their Independence and what it does issue now and though you could tell us something about them, John.
Thanks a lot.

Ivan, sorry for the delay in responding.

Here is a picture of a typical post 1947 Indian issue kukri. They are machine made with a very heavy, solid blade of high quality steel. The scale grips are of horn and may or may not have the 'ring'. The riveting is different, as is the brass buttcap depending on the armoury/manufacturer where it was produced. The karda and chakmak are also well made with large handles of horn or wood. The scabbards are fashioned nicely with black dyed goatskin. Occasionally you will find a brown scabbard while very few of either model have steel or brass chapes. There is no pocket for the tinder pouch as that area is where the hanging straps are fastened. I have never seen an authentic mark on either blade or scabbard and any with the word 'India' or with a broad arrow are tourist copies. Most of the manufacture took place in Northeast India at various depots and associated contracted manufacturers.
