After reading a recent thread here, concerning making your own knife to carry as a example to show people that ask "you make knives????" , I decided, heck I'v made'm for my boy, my dad, my grandpap,ect...why not make one for me.

So Im thinking this is the one I'll keep,

It's forged from 5160 round stock and flat ground. It has a stainless guard and butt cap, and stainless, vulcanized paper and buffalo horn spacers. The handle was a huge crown of really textured mule deer, but it had a brow tine, and .....eh just didnt want all the bumps on it, so I ground it off and shaped it down then dyed and polished.

In the pic, those aren't scratches you see, as I finished this blade down to like 900 grit, but then I etched it for a good while.

thank for looking,

oh yeah, I wanted to add that I clay quenched this blade as well, and while it didn't give the same cool effects as some other steels, I like the results, and that patern you see etched by the ricasso is Identical on both sides....pretty neat I think.

11 5/8 o.a., 1 1/8'' wide at choil, and just over 7'' tip to guard

thanks all

Probale my favorite of yours that I have seen... I would keep that one also:thumbup:

definately by far my favorite knife of yours i have seen.....very nice piece to show prospective customers.....ryan:thumbup:

nice calling card brother!
I agree that this is a real sweetie. However, I think you are being a little optimistic in thinking that you are actually going to be able to keep it;).

I think maybe ill drill a big hole in the handle so im not tempted to sell...ehh maybe not, but i will keep it, and plan to do some more similar, soon as i get caught up on some stuff

I don't doubt that someone who is looking for a solid investment at a good rate will make selling it worth your while:thumbup: The best thing about making knives for yourself is that they're never good enough, so you have to keep selling them in order to finally make one that is;). Then you retire...
Just kidding, beer thirty:D

Very nice work. Although the temptation is to keep anything nice you do, I would classify this one as a "sales sample" which could be for sale if somebody wanted it and a couple of more knives badly enough.:D Interesting treatment of the mule deer antler. I had a sambar stag roll which was pretty much unusable, but I had used it to test leather dye. I ground it down smooth and it looks a bit like brown walrus ivory, so I plan to use it on a knife and see how it goes over.

Well Ive never really been tempted to keep anything I made....though I did make an iron park bench one time we kept, but other than that, I'd just as soon sell everything , can always make another.

Not to say that I have always sold every knife I made, or that I do now cause I dont, for a long time I destroyed most of them, and on occassion still do. I'll destroy it and see just how good it holds up...why???? cause thats what the voices tell me to do??

And like I stated, I read that post where the gentleman refered to making a nice one for yourself...i guess it's like advertisment that you can take with you. I dont know how many times I've been at a function, and sombody refers to me making knives, then all the sudden they wanna see something, but i never have anything, so now i do.....for now.
