Since I am not real well known on the custom knife scene yet, I was both surprised:eek: and honored when Paul contacted me about wanting to add a piece of my work to his collection! He gave me little to go on other than a plain carbon steel blade, and an OAL of around 6 1/2 inches. Here is the resulting knife and sheath.
1095 blade w/antique finish, white bark mammoth scales, brass pins, filework, patterened copper band with rawhide wrappings, deerskin dangler with mammoth bead, and blacksmith's curl.
Sheath is rawhide over veg-tan, copper tacks, deerskin fringe, tin cones, horsehair, and a carved mammoth ivory arrowhead.

A lot of the time a "little to go on" is all a real maker needs and this time John nailed the look and style I wanted perfectly. Had I tried to wonder into strange territory and tell him to do this or that, I'm quite sure I could have screwed up an otherwise perfect effort on his part. We all know the knife and sheath is brand new, but it looks 150 years old right down to the aging of the blade steel and that's what I wanted. Thank you, John. You are really good at what you do.

Great looking stuff there. It seems like a lot of the time when you give too many instructions it really limits the person creating the item. It's that way with knives and a lot of other types of art as well. When you let the person making it do what they like, it seems like you usually end up with a much nicer end product.

That is a VERY nice knife. I really love the look. Years ago, I would never have thought I would like any custom "yesteryear" knives. But now, I find them absolutely beautiful. I guess it has alot to do with heritage. And we are finally seeing a greater interest in makers diversifying into making them. John, it's a beauty!

Outstanding.
Looks like it would be right at home around the neck or on the belt of one of our founding fathers.

looks great as always john.....paul must be happy NOT to have to make a sheath for this one.....ryan:thumbup:

Thanks guys!!Paul I'm thrilled you like this piece so much and I was honored to make it for you.

Paul, glad to see some of those numerous knives the USPS man drops off at your shop are staying put. It is nice to know what you want in a custom and seek it out. Really like this newest addition.
