One for people who know their blade geometry...

Right, I don't know a lot about knife edge geometry.. I know which shapes hold an edge etc... but have a question for either Jerry and Co. or someone else with knowledge in this area.

I have recently acquired my first Busse, a CGFBM, which I am OVER THE MOON WITH!!!!

I started a thread about 'shaving sharpness', and whether the FBM would come with this or not...

Now, it can shave hair, but isn't super razor sharp... and I wouldn't really expect this from a chopper anyways, as I'd use a smaller sized knife where a razors edge was necessary, as the work would more than likely be a bit too intricate for a 16" knife ;)

I guess this is my question...

Is the CGFBM ground to its best possible performance and edge retention for the tasks it was intended for?? (I know the tasks are VERY varied BTW) I know that different peeps like to put different edge finishes on their blades, but as I'm gonna chop with this, and not shave my hair, I see no need to sharpen it any further... Im wondering if the CGFBM is ground to the edge that its best optimised with??

PS - After re-reading this, it sounds as if I'm questioning Jerry's edge making ability, which I do NOT mean in any way, its just my own lack of understanding in this specific area...

I know many say INFI will hold up anyways if you put a hotter edge on the CGFBM, but again, I'm just curious as to whether this particualr edge on this particular knife, was put there as its the best overal edge that this chopper requires...

Thanks for reading, if this has come off as me 'questioning' the blades performance, its most definately not supposed to...

God.............. don't I waffle on?? lol  :o :)

I think Jerry has experimented with many edges and the current one is a compromise or user edge. It isn't really a great edge, but it's not bad. The sharpest edges on busses I have seen so far have been the Assymetrical ede and the Zero edge, both of which would shave hair easily. I personally like my knives severely(or scary) sharp and Busses come sharp but not severely sharp. However, if you get a Satin Zero Tolerance blade, it will be severely sharp with it's zero edge. If you get an older model LE blade it will be severely sharp, my old assymetrical edge straight hndles are scary sharp.

INFI can get very sharp. In fact, the PBF that I just sent to Turner is one of the sharpest knives I have ever had.

You're just one sharp guy, cobalt!

The "zero edge" on my Aftershock is scary, that thing will shave hair it's whole length, next comes the assym edges.

Guess I'm agreeing with Cobalt , like Ducci said, must be one sharp guy

Thanks guys, appreciate your responses!

I may make my FBM sharper after all!

As it stands though, I'd need to thin the edge out to get it any sharper I believe... So will need some coarse sand paper!

My two knives didn't come even close to what I would call sharp. I'm sure my knives were close to most everyone elses in the way they were sharpened though. You will need to thin out the edge significantly to get it up to it's full potential. When I'm done with my two knives they will have a V grind and have almost a 1/4" bevel. (From cutting edge to coating.)
This may seem extreme, and it is. It will also cut about three to four times better chopping on wood. One chop will equal three or four chops of the factory edge. This pertains to soft woods mainly, though it will do much better on everything including hardwoods.

Top man xanax, I'm considering doing this sometime ... I see that VTW put a zero edge on his FBM, but I'd be interested in either...
