Okay I just ran across something that I have never seen before. A few months back I bought an Opinal. It was one of the ones with the bright colored green handles. Not sure if its plastic or wood. Anyway, the knife has never been used. Opened and closed it a few times and noticed that it was really stiff opening and closing. Was going through my knives this morning and organizing them. Picked up the Opinal and opened it and it just fell open. When I grabbed the end of the blade it wobbles side to side really bad... and I mean really bad as in unusable. Even after I engaged the locking ring it still has significant side to side play. Any thought on this anomaly and what I can do to fix the problem? I'm stumped. I have never seen anything like this before. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

It isn't a complicated mechanism. You can pop off the ring and push out the pivot and see what the problem might be.

I tried but could not get it to come off. Perhaps the pin is in the way. I'll get a magnifier and see if I can get a closer look. Thanks

My guess is the handle is wood and it shrunk with the lack of humidity in the winter air... Now I just looked and you live in Texas, It's never very humidity there is it?

Dry as a bone.

Maybe I should park it in my humidor. :)

That is what my Opinel is like now. It technically qualifies as a gravity knife or 'knife that opens by centrifuge' right now, so it's a wee bit illegal to carry where I live...:o

I figured there wasn't much I could do about it, so I haven't bothered to fix it.

Maybe I should just consider it a seasonal item and put it away for now. :) I haven't been able to do much with it.

well personnally id either contact the company and see if they know whats up, or just smash the handle and make a new one, which would be quite a fun project IMO
