Check this out. Hey Ken as the resident Helo expert around here would you like to try this?

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a MF Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life.

Pretty cool and pretty impressive. Pucker factor must be fairly high on that type of hover/landing. I have seen UH1's and others do that type of stuff. Never saw a shithook do it. Like I said, pretty cool. I use to sometimes fly (on tactical missions, but never saw combat) with vietnam era pilots and would see them do some pretty crazy stuff. They were all fantastic pilots.

Wow! That is impressive. That pilot is very skilled with that machine.

wow great skill. It wouldnt be that big of a deal if it was with a huey but damm a chinhook

I'd love to know the story behind how the photographer got to be at the right location at the right time to take that picture. I may be wrong, but I think I read somewhere that that's a picture of special ops being extracted in Afghanistan.

DAMN!...I had some crazy chopper pilots back in the 'Nam (I was a door-gunner on UH-2's for a tour & 1/2), but I don't remember ever seeing anything like that done with one of those big egg-beaters. That pilot must have a sack the size of Texas..

When I was still serving, I met a CH-47 pilot who was afraid of heights. He told me that when he was in his bird, though, he had no fear because he was in total control. I think that pretty much sums up what we see in that picture... total control... and it's awesome.

Not surprising. I have seen those guys do stuff that was absolutely impossible.

Yep, I used to think that a 360° loop-the-loop was impossible in a helo, but it's been done.

Outstanding!!!!
Thanks for posting the pic Triton!
Wish we'd see these on the news so folks would know we got some fantastic troops in the field!!!!!
I used to go out to the flight line at Hurlburt AFB and watch the Pave Low helos come in real fast and steep and then they'd crank the nose back and pull it straight up in the air. What was really amazing is that troops were sitting on the tail gate, for loss of a better term, lol, with their feet hanging out. Man that musta been better than any amusment park ride! I would never have believed one of those huge things could go vertical, tail down, if I hadn't seen it myself. Every time I saw it I worried the rotor would snap.
Awesome aircraft and even more awesome pilots!!!

I wonder if he is part of jolly green. I saw on tv that during nam Jolly Green never refused to fly a mission no matter how bad it was, like rescue some troops with VC fireing rpgs and ak's the crazy crap that other pilots didnt have the balls for.

Respect is due.

I wonder if he's been headhunted by the 160th SOAR yet?

I recall hearing a tape of an after-dinner speaker in the UK. He'd been an RAF fast jet pilot, and was - at the time of the speech - an air traffic controller. The speech is a comic masterpiece.

He tells of being given a lecture on the flight controls of a helicopter, which went something like this: "See these two sticks? Take one in each hand, then wiggle them about until the helicopter does what you wanted it to do. Here's an important tip: Remember where they were, because you might want to do that again some day..."

I do too, but I wonder how much a lot of folks would appreciate it. After all they saw Nicholas Cage and Bruce Willis do much more difficult things just last week at the most recent blow em up movie..
