Good morning all, I was listening to a short podcast the other day and the gentleman mentioned carrying a nice case pocket knife for personal use and then a loaner knife to let others use. This struck me as interesting, I tend to only carry one knife at a time as I don’t like much in my pockets. But it got me wondering how many here carry a personal knife and a loaner? If you do carry a loaner what’s the worst thing you have ever had someone do to your loner knife?

If anyone is interested below is a link to the podcast it’s about 30 minutes and a great listen. The gentleman puts out a new one each week and covers some great topics from squirrel dogs to picking the right watermelon. I find him to be a great story teller and thought you all might enjoy it as well. I am in no way affiliated with the podcast just a guy that enjoys a good story. Mods if this is not OK I will remove the link

Interesting. Although I often carry two knives, neither is a loaner. I will cut something for someone if he asks, but I won't hand a knife to someone to just walk away and do who knows what with it.

I always have at least 2 knives on me, all folders. But I'm not inclined to loan either of them to anyone except family or close friends I trust implicitly to respect my directions for using them. And in all likelihood, I'd likely be closely observing how they use them as well. And I'll be happy to cut something for anyone myself, within normal & sane limits anyway. My family already knows how sharp I like to keep my knives and most of them aren't fully comfortable handling them for that reason. So they just ask me to cut something instead.

I do often carry a belt and pocket pair but basically never loan my knives.
Generally people who know me ( yes they know me and still have to ask )
Will ask " gotta knife " ? followed by " here, cut this for me " .
There's only 2 times I can remember handing my knife to somebody to cut something.
one time to my uncle a year ago or so to open a bag of chicken feed, he made that 1 cut commented on how sharp the knife was was then handed it right back.
He normally carries a knife ( a Buck 305 I gave him ) but didn't have it on him at that time for some reason.

Another time a couple years ago my buddy asked and I handed him the silver Vic Cadet from my pocket then told him to keep it, because I had just ordered a green one from DLT.
Again somebody who normally carries a Buck knife which I gave them, but he left it in his car for some reason.

If I were to be in a situation where subordination or fellowship might require me to share a knife, I would bring a nylon shadow Irish Imperial to share and keep the nice ones to myself.
Not that there's anything wrong with Irish Imperials, but that's what I carry in hospitals in case they've installed metal detectors.

I always have my SAK rambler with me. That should suffice for 99% of what anyone who doesn't usually use a knife could need one for and I don't care if it gets damaged or lost. I've already given a few ramblers away to people I loaned them out to. If someone needs a larger blade, I'll just do the cutting task for them unless, like Obsessed with Edges Obsessed with Edges said, they are a trusted individual who will respect my direction and I can observe how they use the knife.

I almost always have more than one on me, but don’t typically carry a loaner. If someone asks for a knife my first response is always, “What do you need it for?” 🤨

If it doesn’t sound too abusive, I might offer to cut it for them. Not too often will I just hand over my knife. Non-knife people can be pretty careless when cutting stuff. Super easy for them to mess up the tip or the edge to the point where some serious reprofiling would be required.

House Manager asked me the other day ... "Do you have a sharp knife on you? CanI use it to cut these (several cuss words) nylon wire ties?"

I asked "Do you want a locking blade?" ("it don't matter") and told her "Glad you asked for a sharp knife. I don't have any dull ones."

Usually the staff on duty just says "Will you open this can (and drain it when applicable) for me, please?"
I have several scout type knives, and a multi tool with a can opener. The house's electric can opener don't work worth a goldfish's hoot.

I rarely loaned out my knife over the last six decades.

I carry a SAK usually with that intention in mind.
I consider it a sacrificial blade.
That way I don't have to watch in horror as some numbnuts fumbles my prized knives onto the asphalt.

I don't carry a loaner, but I will loan, depending. I generally ask what the task is. If its scraping, praying, screwdriver stuff... sure, have the leatherman and use the screwdriver and awl blades.

As a fountain pen collector, this is actually very similar advice thats offered. some people have no idea how to treat a fountain pen so they may mistakenly damage it. I can see it as an easy extrapolation.
I had this happen at work. I had a safari on my desk and this lady I work with came in and started asking me something. She grabbed my pen and a sticky note to write something down and could figure out how to get it to work. 😅

No harm done though. Just got a weird look and asked why I have a weird pen. Similar conundrum with pocket knives, it’s hard to explain to someone why you’d spend $20+ on one pen when they could get 60 bics for $6.

I will lend my Bics.

Don't carry a loaner. I can count on one hand the number of times someone asked to borrow a knife in my lifetime. If they ask, I will let them use it.
